Course overview
The 'Tutoring in Higher Education' short course is part of the Tutor Professional Learning Programme, an initiative by the Centre for Learning, Teaching & Development to provide tutors with the necessary knowledge, skills, and values to enable them to effectively execute their tutoring responsibilities. Participants will be introduced to tutoring from the South African perspective, the significance of tutoring to improve students' achievement of learning outcomes, facilitation skills, and blended learning.
Motivation for the course
Tutoring is at the heart of every university learning and teaching process designed to improve students’ success rates and to enable students to achieve their learning goals. In the higher education context, tutoring can be described as supplementary teaching that is often provided by senior students, academic professional learning practitioners and other learning facilitators for students to gain basic and more advanced academic skills as well as learning support in specific discipline-related learning and assessment. However, many tutors assume the role with little understanding of what they are expected to do. The purpose of this course is to provide tutors with practical insights about the process of tutoring for them to become efficient and effective.
