Community

We have a strong relationship with our community, via a variety of avenues. Our Parent STEM Steering Committee, along with our business partners have played an active role in the decision-making process surrounding our STEAM Initiative. We have devoted time during the past five years to keep our stakeholders informed of the changes taking place within our buildings, in addition to relying on expertise from them in their specific fields to help us make the wisest decisions from the choices available to us. Local businesses such as Alabama Power and 3M, among others, have graciously supplied us with classroom instruction and in-person visits to classrooms. They have also, graciously, provided financial resources to enhance our STEAM supplies. The Winfield Park and Recreation staff have been an integral part of our success, providing locations for our Fall Festival and/or Spring Fling, as well as serving as an extended classroom in the area of the nature trail and the historical Luxapallila Creek. Students from both elementary and middle schools are able to take part in various activities at the Winfield Community center, such as pottery making. Winfield Police Department has participated in various projects and activities throughout Winfield City Schools STEAM learning. If teachers are covering a particular standard in the classroom where they observe that law enforcement could apply, they may request a visit from our local police chief, Brett Burleson. Some topics that have been discussed in the past are cyber bullying, drugs/alcohol during Red Ribbon Week, shoplifting, and vandalism. Our local law enforcement uses a balanced approach regarding selection, training, and collaboration to help our school district strengthen campus safety, build stronger and respectful relationships, and increase student success. Another one of our strong community supporters is the Main Street Program: The Kemp Foundation. This foundation has provided annual funding and the use of the nostalgically renovated Pastime Theatre and Civic Center for various school events, field trips, and functions. Annual scholarships are also provided by the foundation.

We feel extremely fortunate to have such an amazing group of community supporters who are willing to join us in our crucial transition of the STEAM integration process.

WES is blessed with an abundance of family, community, and stakeholder support. Our local Pepsi Plant provides teachers with various supplies throughout the year. For example, they provide generators and drink coolers for our annual Fall Festival. 3M sends engineers to campus for presentations and also provides funds for Bee-Bots and STEAM bins at Winfield City Schools. Our first graders take a tour of our town, and State Bank & Trust welcomes our little ones, providing age-appropriate banking lessons. Chris Carothers and other bank officials from the Citizens Bank of Winfield read to our elementary students regularly. Our local radio station, WKXM 97.7, hosts a weekly edition of the "Pirate Spotlight," which provides both outreaches to the community and experiences for our young students to be on air every Thursday. These examples are only a small sampling of the many types of support we receive at the elementary school.

Grandparents Day

On Grandparents Day at WES, parents are invited to have lunch with students and join students in the classroom for a math lesson! Grandparents and students worked out math problems together. Grandparents showed students how they were taught to work out certain problems, and students taught their grandparents how to work out the same problems the "new" way.
