We are using a new (Christian based) course this year (Nuevos Amigos), after a number of years using Glencoe's Buen viaje. We will start with an introduction to the Spanish Language - its history and some basic grammar and pronunciation rules. After a couple weeks, we will begin the book and accompanying exercises, concentrating on basic verb conjugation and classroom and family vocabulary.
For this year, Spanish II will conclude the second half of Buen viaje, building on what we learned in the first half of the book (regular, irregular and stem changing present tense verbs) and moving on to other conjugations - reflexive, preterit and present progressive verb conjugations).
Spanish III is optional. This year (and next) we will be using the Spanish III curriculum that continues in the second Buen Viaje text. This year is less structured, as we take our time learning new vocabulary and several more verb conjugations, including the imperfect, future, past perfect and others.
I have taught Spanish at WCA every year but two since 1999. In the early years, the process was to teach Spanish I to one group of students (usually freshmen and/or sophomores) and then teach Spanish II to the same group of students the following year. Then start things over again. Occasionally I would do Spanish I and Spanish III if there was interest in a third year by a few who wanted to continue after their second year. As my full time job at Hancock Lumber has begun to wind down, more time has opened up so that we can offer all three years of Spanish this year for the first time.
Three of my four children are former Spanish students of mine and are graduates of WCA. My wife, Jenny, is the CEO of ABBA, a Christian crisis pregnancy center in Portland. I can be reached at either spratt@hancocklumber.com or spratt@windhamchristian.org.
