Purpose of Foreign Language

Today's world allows for instant communication across the globe.  Proficiency in other languages is a vital skill that allows students to engage with their neighbors and the broader world.  Learning a foreign language leads to cognitive benefits, improved academic achievement, and a competitive edge in the job market as well as providing students with new, diverse perspectives.

Foreign Language Courses

American Sign Language I

Designed to introduce students to American Sign Language, American Sign Language (ASL) I enables students to communicate with deaf persons through fingerspelling, signed words, and gestures. Course topics may include the culture of and issues facing deaf people.

American Sign Language II

American Sign Language (ASL) II builds upon skills developed in ASL I, extending students’ ability to understand and express themselves in American Sign Language and increasing their vocabulary and speed.  Typically, students learn how to engage in discourse for informative or social purposes and to comprehend the language when signed slowly.

Spanish I

Prerequisite: C or better in English or teacher approval

This basic course in the Spanish language will enable the student to learn vocabulary and grammar.  Beginning conversation and short reading selections are also included in the class.  Throughout the year students will be exposed to various aspects of the Hispanic culture.

Spanish II

Prerequisite: Spanish I

Building upon the basics learned in Spanish I, this course will expand the student’s vocabulary and grammar and introduce additional verb tenses.  More conversations will be presented and used, as well as working with additional reading selections.  Continued exposure to the culture of Spanish-speaking countries is included.

Spanish III

Length: 1 year

Level: Honors

Credit: 1

Prerequisite: Spanish II

Greater emphasis will be placed on reading and translation as well as conversation.  Additional vocabulary and grammar will be introduced and reviewed.  Several types of Spanish literature, including magazines and newspaper articles will be used to reinforce vocabulary and culture.

Spanish IV

Level: Honors

Prerequisite: Spanish III

As an advanced intermediate course of study, this class will stress grammar, vocabulary, and conversation in preparation for college placement tests.  Reading selections from popular Spanish literature will be used, and individual projects dealing with culture, history, and geography will also be a part of this class.
