Business & Technology courses provide students the opportunity to gauge interest and build skills in the areas of communications, information technology, digital literacy, economics, entrepreneurship, interpersonal and leadership skills, marketing, and more.  These courses help students become college and career ready through critical thinking and real-world application of skills.  Students are provided opportunities to use current and emerging technology.

Information Processing

Information Processing is a skill-level course that includes the concepts and terminology related to the people, equipment and procedures of information processing as well as skill development in the use of information processing equipment. Students will create and update documents using word processing and desktop publishing programs and put together slideshows, speaker notes and handouts using presentation software. Students will revise data in a stored database and use queries to create customized reports. Students will edit and utilize calculation functions in spreadsheets, integrate graphics, spreadsheet, tables, text and data into documents and reports, and create graphs and charts from spreadsheets. Students may learn to conduct research on the Internet, prepare and answer routine correspondence, organize and maintain a filing system, maintain an appointment calendar, make travel arrangements, prepare itineraries, expense reports and timesheets. Workplace skills as well as communication skills (thinking, listening, composing, revising, editing and speaking) will be taught and integrated throughout this course.

This course counts toward the Illinois Computer Literacy graduation requirement.

Internet Concepts and Tools

This course is a skill level course where students will be exposed to general Internet concepts and various tools/ software available on the Internet. Students will develop powerful creations using free downloaded software tools. Students will learn to use the tools to design and implement their creation. Several tools will be introduced, such as Computer Science software, research topics, social media uses and safety.  Other areas that may be explored are wikis and blogs and other miscellaneous tools. Students will be expected to create individual and team projects, demonstrate skills during those projects, and create written reflections on the project/software tools.

This course counts toward the Illinois Computer Literacy graduation requirement.

Introduction to Business

This orientation-level course will provide an overview of all aspects of business marketing and management, including the concepts, functions, and skills required for meeting the challenges of operating a business in a global economy. Topics covered will include the various forms of business ownership, including entrepreneurship, as well as the basic functional areas of business (finance, management, marketing, administration, and production).Students will be introduced to a wide range of careers in fields such as accounting, financial services, information technology, marketing, and management. Emphasis will be placed on using the computer while studying applications in these careers along with communication skills (thinking, listening, composing, revising, editing, and speaking), math and problem solving. Business ethics as well as other workplace skills will be taught and integrated within this course.

Sports Marketing & Media

Sports Marketing and Media looks at how to apply marketing principles to the sports industry specifically. Students can learn about how to tailor marketing concepts and use media outlets for the sports industry, how to identify current trends and how to develop strategies based on this research.

Digital Media Design & Production

The Digital Media Design & Production will provide students with hands-on learning experiences in the areas of graphic design and production, broadcasting and livestreaming, computers in communication, photography, and a variety of additional technologies.  Students will use various technology to foster an awareness and understanding of communication and media in our modern society.  A significant portion of students grades will come from the production of media, both still images and video, that will be used on school-based social media, websites, and YouTube channels.  Students will be expected to assist with the livestreaming and media-related activities at school athletic and extracurricular events.

Accounting

Accounting is a skill level course provided for those students who are interested in entering a business office upon completion of high school or are planning to major in a business related field in college. Accounting I involves the reading, interpreting, translating and recording of business transactions. The course focuses on the use of journals, ledgers, worksheets, income statement and balance sheets for sole proprietors and partnerships. Mastery of basic mathematical skills and the ability to think in a logical manner are essential. The final project involves a simulation of an accounting business model.

Advanced Accounting

Advanced Accounting is a skill-level course that builds upon the foundation established in Accounting. This course is planned to help students develop in-depth knowledge of the principles of accounting with more emphasis being placed on financial statements and accounting records. The course is a study of previously learned principles as they apply to more complicated types of business organizations. 

Consumer Education

Cooperative Interrelated Education Class (Co-op I)

Cooperative Education Class is available to students who are in the second semester of their Junior year and will be interested in participating in the Cooperative Work Program as a Senior. This Junior year course will work with students to discuss and teach the skills needed to seek and obtain employment, such as job search skills, job

application techniques, and interviewing skills. Issues discussed will include: How do I get a job without any experience? How do I get experience without having a job? This is a dilemma that many students face as they prepare themselves for graduation and beyond. This class is a prerequisite to participation in the Cooperative Work Training Program offered during a student’s Senior year. This course meets the requirement for Consumer Education instruction as required by the School Code of Illinois (Section 27-12.1)

Cooperative Interrelated Education Class (Co-op II)

Cooperative Work Training is available to students who are interested in actual on-the-job training related to their occupational choices through supervised work experience. Cooperative Work Training consists of 2 phases: related class (1/2 credit) and on-the-job (1/2 credit per semester). Students interested in the program will be considered based upon attendance, past school performance, acquired skills and teacher recommendation. Topics covered in the related class include budgeting, taxes, savings and plans for financial security, applying for and maintaining good credit, investing and general information concerning the world of work. Topics covered on the job site include specific instructions in the student’s field of training. Each student is required to agree and abide by certain regulations, which apply specifically to cooperative education students. Students are required to have an employable job experience prior to the add/drop deadline. Students must maintain passing grades in all subjects including previous semester to continue participation in the co-op program.

THIS CLASS MUST BE TAKEN AT THE SAME TIME THE STUDENT IS ENROLLED IN CO-OP JOB EXPERIENCE DURING THE FIRST SEMESTER OF THEIR SENIOR YEAR. STUDENTS WILL ATTEND DAILY CLASS DURING THE FIRST SEMESTER OF THEIR SENIOR YEAR AND WILL BE REQUIRED TO MEET PERIODICALLY (AT THE TEACHER’S DISCRETION) DURING THE SECOND SEMESTER OF THEIR SENIOR YEAR TO COMPLETE REQUIRED RECORDS.

Cooperative Interrelated Education Job (Co-op Job)

Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunity (CEO)

CEO is a year-long course designed to utilize partnerships that provide an overview of business development and processes.  The local business community partners with area schools to create project based experiences for students by providing funding, expertise, meeting space, business tours and one-on-one mentoring.  Students visit area businesses, learn from guest speakers, participate in a class business, write business plans, and start and operate their own business.  Business concepts learned through the experiential CEO class are critical; the 21st century skills of problem solving, teamwork, self-motivation, responsibility, higher order thinking, communication and inquiry are at the heart of student development throughout the course.  The class meets for 1 ½ hours each school day from 7:30-9:00 am in a variety of businesses.  The class is facilitated by a local resident and completely supported financially by our CEO Business Investors.  

This course counts as the Consumer Ed requirement for graduation.
