IB Film Studies

“Filmmaking is a chance to live many lifetimes.”

Robert Altman

About this course...

This course takes two years to fully examine the 4 coursework aspects of Film Studies. You will study films chronologically through famous film movements, while also watching their contemporary counterpart. Films will come from a wide space of time and geographical location. Students will also participate in creating their own films both individually and collaboratively.

  • Textual analysis: an independent detailed study of film sequences including research of relevant context and their influence.

  • Comparative Study: an independent film essay of two films from different continents or time periods (20 years or more) comparing and contrasting film movements, genres or theories including relevant context and their influence.

  • Film Portfolio: an independent and collaborative experimental range of exploration in three chosen film roles, including one complete three minute film.

  • Collaborative Project: a collaborative film exploration through one chosen film role working with a team to complete a seven minute film.
