Beyond the Qualifications

You are more than your grades...

We strongly advocate developing a student’s sense of the world outside of the classroom, developing curiosity, ambition, and global awareness. With this in mind, we are proud of the supportive environment and sense of community which exists within the sixth form and the academy itself. Whilst in our sixth form, each student is offered individual and impartial careers advice and guidance. We are incredibly proud to provide a structure and aid in planning and writing personal statements, which helps our students to make informed decisions about their future Post 18. Bespoke UCAS, apprenticeship, and employability sessions enable students to choose the right pathway for them and fully prepare for the next chapter of their lives. Together with the Leigh Academies Trust Engagement Team and Careers Advisers, personal tutors offer tailored advice and guidance in order to help students progress within their chosen careers.

We work in close partnership with the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University, and the University for the Creative Arts. Our provision includes opportunities for students to find out more about university study by visiting university campuses and interacting with ambassadors. All of our students also benefit from opportunities to hear from current apprentices and apprenticeship providers as an alternative to the ‘traditional path’ taken to achieve an undergraduate degree. This, together with a range of guest speakers, national and international trips and bespoke workshops, helps you to develop the softer skills which your future employers are crying out for!

What you will have access to:

  • Work Experience

  • Employability sessions

  • Dedicated UCAS and Apprenticeship Support

  • Employer Engagement

  • Peer Mentoring Scheme

  • Community Engagement

  • Student Leadership

  • Wilmington Academy Alumni

What you have to do...

From the links below, you can see that there are three key areas to think about: how you can the develop essential skills you will need to thrive in your studies, how you can improve your current study and revision patterns to help you achieve those higher grades, and what steps you can take now in order to help you to begin to start thinking about your future.

Each key area contains sessions, useful links and tasks which you can work through in order to develop your awareness, knowledge, and practice. This will help you with your transition into Post 16 and beyond.

Getting you started...

Below you will find a copy of the Horizons Project. This is designed to get you thinking about your next steps after Post 16 and your future. This will help us to get to know you better and also help us to make sure the guidance and advice we offer is best suited to your dreams, aspirations and career goals. Your completed Horizons Projects should be handed in to your new form tutors during your first week with us in September.
