In May of 2017 I took a class at wilkes University called "Malaysia's Alternate Modernity." This class focused on Malaysia's history and their connection with other countries such as England, the Netherlands, Portugoal and how the Malaysian people adapted to colonization and later moved to independence. After learning about their history and how Malaysia as a country has an alternate form of modernity when focusing on spirituality and culture. This class included a two week trip to Malaysia after the semester had ended. The trip was a field experience to show the students what we had diacussed in class. This was my first trip in college and showed me Malaysia in a new light. Although I had been to Malaysia many times before this class and trip opened my mind to the country and made me rethink how I see the people and the culture as a whole. This trip ultimately sparked a fire in me that lead me to new experiences including my 2018 and 2019 trips as well as my search for work abroad that will hopefully follow my graduation.
