This video shows you how to make an account on Nature Counts. There are certain advantages to creating your account:
Managing your own records
Keeping track of your species lists
Seeing your records get verified by iRecord verifiers - wildlife experts!
For more information about how to explore your records once you've created an account go to this page: Exploring data
This video shows you how to submit a single record for one species (but you can specify a quantity of organism if you saw a group of them) at a place at a time.
Not sure what a record is then check out this page: Records

You can upload audio files, eg for a recording of a bird or a bat.
You can do this by instead of adding a photo you simply add an audio file.
The audio file types you can upload are:
.mp3
.wav
If you need to convert to an .mp3 file you can use online utilities like this: https://audio.online-convert.com/convert-to-mp3
This video shows you how to upload a list of records which have been recorded at the same place at the same time by the same person.

You can also upload audio files 🔊 for lists of records.
This video shows you how to view the details of a record and edit a record. Note that if you edit a record that has already been verified by an iRecord verifier, it may become unverified until a verifier can check any changes you've made.
This is for staff accounts only.
The file you import must be saved as a file of type *.CSV (Comma Separated Values). Use the following column titles to ensure that the data will be matched to the correct fields in the database:
Date - dd/mm/yyy or yyyy-mm-dd format.
Recorder name - name of the recorder
Species - species name which must match one of the available names from the UKSI list
Certainty - Certain, Likely or Uncertain
Quantity - free text, e.g. a numeric count or other abundance indicator
Sex - not recorded, male, female or mixed
Stage - not recorded, adult, pre-adult or other
Identified by - name of the person who identified the species
Sensitivity precision - for sensitive records, specify 1000, 10000 or 100000 as the size of the square to blur the record to
Location - site name
Spatial reference - Ordnance Survey grid reference format
Habitat - habitat name picked from the list available on the Enter a Casual Record form
Comment - free text
When you import the data, the system will attempt to automatically match up the column titles to database fields. If there are any unmatched columns you will be offered the chance to match them up on a Column Mapping screen.
After importing, all successful rows will go straight into the database. if there are any errors you will be offered a file download containing just the rows with errors. The last columns explain the error. Download the file and fix the errors, then upload just this single file to complete the import.
Here is my excel sheet with the appropriate columns. You can see that I have misspelled the species name in the second row.
In excel I go 'Save as' and choose a file format which is a .csv
I navigate to your Nature Counts site ../import and click choose file then click upload
This takes you to the next page where you need to select the survey dataset. If you are just uploading generic records, as opposed to survey data with extra data, then select the 'General records' survey dataset. Then click next.
This will then take you to this page. This is where you will make sure that any columns in your CSV are correctly matched to the the data structure in Nature Counts. You can see that at the moment all my columns have been correctly matched up except for my 'Comment' column which is not going to be imported. In order to change it to be imported I can select 'Comment' under the 'Occurrence' category. Then press upload.
