Roy Lichtenstein inspired Self Portraits

Following our work with contour lines, we began looking at Pop Artist Roy Lichtenstein. We discussed his comic book style contributions to the art world, his position as an artist on the East End, and what it means to be a Pop Artist.

Students then photographed themselves and created self portraits inspired by his lines, use of color, and pop art style.

They did an amazing job and worked so hard! So proud of our 5th graders!

Contour Line + Blind Contour

In January we focused on Contour Line drawing and had a lot of find practicing Blind Contour Drawings! Blind contour drawings are when we are looking only at our subject (or what we're drawing), and not our paper. Also, we are not allowed to lift our pen or pencil until we are finished drawing. While it's very challenging (and produces some very fun results!), this practice refines out drawing skills and helps us to draw what we see and not what we think we see.

One continuous contour line.

Great work!

5th Grade Knitting Collaboration

5th grade has been busy this month!

Students haven taken a close look fiber artists, both local and around the world, who utilize knitting or crochet, as well as the concept of public art installation as they've learned to knit themselves in preparation for a grade-wide collaboration coming soon!

This week we began looking at graffiti and street art, debating whether all graffiti is vandalism, and if graffiti is old or new.

In the next few weeks, students will work on a text based artwork inspired by the graffiti we investigated.
