1st Grade

May 2021, June 2021

Students have been learning about Piping Plovers, an endangered bird that we find on our own ocean beaches! We talked about why these birds are so important, and ways we can help protect them. Students created beautiful simple pencil drawings of these birds.

Students have been learning about symmetry by creating beautiful butterflies using paint and chalk pastels, and a simple printing technique!

Over the past few weeks, 1st grade has been learning about the artwork of Laurel Burch. We've been looking especially close at her cats which have inspired students to create their own!

St. Patrick's Day Rainbow Activity

This week, we took a break from out projects to create 3D rainbows. Students loved adding something under the rainbow!

Colorful, Imaginary Creatures!

This month, students in 1st grade created their own imaginary creatures - including sewing up little pockets to carry them in! The students absolutely loved this project as well as the ability to be so openly creative and experiment with a variety of hands on materials.

Birds inspired by Charley Harper!

This month, students created birds inspired by illustrator Charley Harper's simple shape and line drawings. I loved how some students added hats or bows to personalize their birds!

December 2020 - January 2021

This month, first grade looked at Maurice Sendak's use of texture. Inspired by Little Bear and Where the Wild Things Are, students created bears of their own!

November 2020

This month, students have been looking at the work of Piet Mondrian and his connection to maps and New York City! Students have also been learning about and practicing horizontal and vertical lines, and where we find them.

Students created their own maps of Westhampton Beach, adding in places in our town such as home, school, the library, and the Beach Bakery!

This month in 1st Grade, we looked at the artist Alma Thomas and read The Dot, by: Peter H Reynolds to celebrate Dot Day, September 15. We were inspired to begin our own dot paintings!
