Summarizing

Performance Objective:

After the instruction, having an explanation and guidance, students will be able to summarize a text, and write at least 4 main topics to be used in their presentation. 100% accuracy is expected.

Time:

80-minute lesson.

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities

Gain Attention: Ask learners how they feel about summarizing a text. Did they use to do that? How easy was it? Get them talking about it.

Build Motivation: Tell them they are going to read a text and you are going to guide them into steps to summarize it.

Step 2: Content Presentation

Present the text to the students; you can access it on resources page. First, ask them to read silently, later read with them. Tell them they are going to identify the main idea in each paragraph. Use the slide presentation below.

Step 3: Learner Participation

At this step, ask the students to underline the main ideas as they read. Work together explaining through all paragraphs.

Step 4: Assessment

Students will read a text, identify the main ideas and write a paragraph summarizing it. Access the texts by clicking on the resources page. Access the rubric by clicking on assessment picture.

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities

Learners will redo the activity with a different text to practice.
