By the end of this task, watching a five-minute video, students will learn what public speaking is, and practice their comprehension skill by answering an eight-question Google Forms activity about the video with 80% of correct answers.
120-minute lesson
Tell the students they are going to have an example of public speaking. Give an overview of the video they are about to see; access the video transcript on resources page. Play TED talk video. Show the rubric, which is on slide 4 of the presentation, so they know what kind of information they have to focus on.
At this step, students will use their i Pads to take notes during the listening. Play the video twice; after, ask them to write a paragraph with the notes they took, using Google Docs. Ask them to share with you, so you can have an idea about their prior knowledge in writing skills.
Gain Attention: Ask learners if they have ever delivered a speech and how they felt about it. Every student will share their experiences. Access a Google slide presentation below.
Build Motivation: Tell them how you personally overcame the fear of speaking in public.
