We are pleased to present our September 13, 2017 program: “The Voice as an Instrument of Persuasion.” The program will be presented by Charles L. Becton. Becton has had a long and distinguished legal career, including service as a judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals and former president of the North Carolina Bar Association (the first African-American president of that organization).
Becton’s presentation deals with the Art of Advocacy and how the virtuosos of trial advocacy use their voices, gestures, movements, and story-telling techniques to gain and maintain attention, involve and engage listeners, and persuade listeners to act. In short, making an argument that people agree with is not enough. The advocate must motivate people to act.
