"The Perils and Promise of Heirs' Property"
Presented by Professor Scott Schang
Every day, landowners in North Carolina lose their real property because of insecure title. In particular, many families have owned property for generations as tenants in common after an ancestor died without a will or left the property to their descendants. In North Carolina, owning property in this manner often leaves co-owners unable to access credit, disaster assistance, and farm assistance as well as being vulnerable to predatory behavior. At the same time, many families prefer to hold title jointly. Join us to discuss how the Wake Forest Law Heirs Property Project is working with families, law students, and local community organizations and members to address the promise and perils of heirs property across the State.
