Paul Martin Newby was raised in Jamestown, NC where he graduated from Ragsdale High School. He received his B.A. degree in Public Policy Studies (Magna Cum Laude) from Duke University in 1977. He earned his J.D. degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1980.
From 1980 to 1984, Paul Martin Newby served as an Attorney in the law firm of Van Winkle, Bukc, Wall, Starnes & Davis, PA, in Asheville, NC.
From 1984 to 1985, Paul Martin Newby was Vice President and General Counsel for Cannon Mills Realty and Development Corporation in Kanapolis, NC.
In 1985, Paul Martin Newby was appointed as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina in Raleigh, NC, where he continued for nineteen years.
In a 2004 Special Election, Paul Martin Newby was elected as an Associate Justice on the NC Supreme Court, replacing Associate Justice Robert F. Orr, who had resigned on July 31, 2004. In November of 2012, he was re-elected and continues to serve on the NC Supreme Court (as of 2015).
Paul Martin Newby is an Adjunct Professor at the Campbell University's Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law (as of 2015).
