We are pleased to present our February program: “Failure to Thrive: A Call to Action on Lawyer Well Being.” On July 15, 2017, an article by Eilene Zimmerman was published in the New York Times – The Lawyer, the Addict: A high-powered Silicon Valley attorney dies. His ex-wife investigates, and finds a web of drug abuse in his profession. This month’s program, presented by Tom Roman, a clinical assistant with the North Carolina Lawyer Assistance Program, explores issues raised in the article.
Tom is a licensed Pennsylvania attorney in long term recovery who lives in Cary, NC, with his wife of 22 years and two teenage sons. He graduated from college at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and earned his J.D. at Widener University School of Law in Wilmington, DE. He has been involved in lawyers’ recovery groups throughout the Mid-Atlantic since 2002, and he is an active volunteer in both Pennsylvania’s and North Carolina’s Lawyers Assistance Programs, and the American Bar Association’s Commission on Lawyers Assistance Programs. Tom has worked both privately and professionally over the last 14 years promoting attorney wellness and has personally benefited from lawyers’ assistance groups and 12 Step Fellowships. He is a Community Liaison with The Shores Treatment and Recovery, a residential addiction treatment facility located in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
