LI: Identify and make equivalent fractions and use improper fractions to represent more than one whole.
Equivalent fractions are fractions that have the same value as another fraction. For example, one equivalent fraction of 1/2 is 2/4.
Improper fractions are top-heavy fractions where the numerator is bigger than the denominator such as 5/3.
To turn improper fractions into mixed numbers, we need to figure out the number of whole and remainder, just like division. For example, in 5/3, 3 fits into 5 once and leaves 2. Therefore, it can be rewritten as 1 and 3/5.

LI: Find the common denominator to add and subtract fractions
Example)
3 - 3/4 + 2/3 + 1/2
Find the smallest common multiplier for all the denominators. This is your NEW denominator.
e.g.
4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 40
3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30
2, 4, 8, 12,14, 16, 18, 20
Work out the multiplier needed to convert each of the old denominator into the new denominator.
e.g.
4 x ? = 12 ? = 3
3 x ? = 12 ? = 4
2 x ? = 12 ? = 6
Times the numerator by the multiplier for its denominator.
e.g.
3/4 - multiplier for denominator 4 = 3 THEREFORE 3 x 3 = 9 3/4 = 9/12
Add the numerators (Denominator ALWAYS stays the SAME).
Subtract the new fraction (i.e. answer to step 4) from the given whole. *** REMEMBER whole numbers have the SAME numerator and denominator (e.g. 3/3 or 5/5).
