What is the Alternative Learning Centre?
Because we keep on trying to make progress on a daily basis.
The ALC is tasked with providing a safe, engaging and nurturing environment for children who have severe behavioural, emotional or social difficulties; and provide a framework for them to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to continue with their education or seek meaningful employment.
The end goal is to reintegrate children into mainstream lessons although this may not be the case for all children as some thrive in an ALC setting instead.
Support children to better manage their emotions or ‘big feelings’
Support staff with behaviours of concern in class
Work with school counsellors
Support/ engage parents/carers where possible
Provide children with good positive role models
Foster a nurturing environment based on:
Respect
Celebrating achievements & success
A safe space where children can make mistakes,
take risks & become passionately curious
We follow an Alternative Learning Curriculum whereby children need to put together portfolios of evidence in a project based environment to work towards accreditation through an awarding body called Asdan.
