Course details
The topics we cover throughout the KS3 Geography course allow students the opportunity to learn about a large range of global issues, environmental processes, and amazing facts. They will be taught a range of geographical skills which could be useful later in life, like map reading, creating plans and giving directions. As well as this, the students will be taught how to use information and evidence from graphs to form arguments. They will come across a range of current world affairs and look at global issues, inequalities and injustices, and how to tackle them. Lastly, they will gain an insight to the natural world and the processes that govern it.
Programme of study Y7
World Map Week - A short topic to reinforce the students' knowledge on continents, countries in Europe, world's mountains, oceans, rivers, and seas.
Geography...and you - Students will be introduced to the three strands of geography (physical, human, environmental), and how to be a good geographer. They will be introduced to command words.
Maps and Mapping - Here students learn how to read and create plans, and how to properly navigate maps with different scales.
Africa - Students will be introduced to a continent they know very little about; they will explore Africa's history, its varied population, and its natural environment.
Programme of study Y8
Population - Students will get to learn about the theory that underpins a large part of human geography; demographics. They will see how our population is changing and how it could impact our planet.
Coasts - Here students will learn about the natural processes that shape coastlines all around the world. (Aiming to have a field trip where students explore the coastline of Gibraltar, applying the theory they learnt in the classroom)
Weather and Climate - This topic allows students to gain an understanding on why we experience a range of weather phenomenon.
Programme of study Y9
Climate change - This topic gives students the opportunity to learn about a very real, pressing global issue - climate change. They will learn about the causes and consequences of this issue, and how we can tackle this issue.
Restless Earth - Students' favourite topic; here they will explore why earthquakes and volcanoes happen, what their effects are, and how to respond to these hazards, using real world examples.
Urbanisation - This topic will open the students eyes to the vastly contrasting urban areas around the world. The students will learn why people move to citiies, and how many end up living in squatter settlements.
Assessment
Students will sit an end of topic test after every topic covered. They will, however, have other opportunities to display their knowledge and skills through lesson assessments such as posters, presentations, essays and other small lesson assessments.
