What will I be learning?
BTEC Applied Science Specification
How do I develop my knowledge?
Use the following tools during your studies to support you in learning the content and skills being taught:
Produce spider-diagrams of topics, focussing on linking up the different points
Pre-reading: focus on gaining an understanding of the concepts and scientific terminology which you can then build on in lessons. You can also prepare questions for your teacher to clarify any misconceptions.
Low stakes-tests using Kognity/paperplains/allthingsbiology/inthinking: this will not only support you in applying your knowledge but in improving long term memory
Flashcards: use these regularly to support in the transfer of knowledge from your working memory/short term memory to your long term memory
Review and consolidate: After lessons have been taught, review different sources of information to support in understanding the conctent and building on it - this can be done using videos online, using Kognity/inthinking or using textbooks. The knowledge will be explained in different ways and this will aid understanding.
How can I expand my understanding beyond the curriculum?
Studies have shown that students who have a better background knowledge of science, tend to do better academically, as they can build on existing knowledge. Students working at IB level, should continue to gain this substantive knowledge so that they can build new knowledge but also have more familiarity with the concepts and content being taught, as well as, in comprhension of exam questions.
Students should also:
Read scientific journals/articles/news
Watch scientific videos
Research and understand the contexts which are given in exam questions, e.g. having a knowledge of the various practiclals which have been conducted over time in the development of science or have a good understanding of current affairs where they link to science and the guide
Attend workshops/masterclasses/lectures from universities
Complete external courses, e.g. Makerspace
