BTEC Level 3 Business (IBCP)
Year 12 Business
Year 12 students studying this course will complete a number of mandatory and optional units for their course, which are as follows;
Unit 1 Exploring Business (Terms 1-3)
Students explore the features of different businesses and what makes them successful. They investigate how businesses are organised and examine the environment in which businesses operate.
Unit 2 Developing a Marketing Campaign (Term 1-2)
Here students will examine marketing aims and objectives for existing products/services and understand the importance of relevant, valid and appropriate research in relation to the needs and wants of customers; using market research data and other information to make recommendations.
Unit 21 Training and Development (Term 1-2)
Students study training and development and recognise that successful businesses need to plan and manage the training programmes they offer.
Unit 3 Personal and Business Finance
Students understand the importance of managing personal finance and explore the personal finance sector. Students understand the purpose of accounting and learn how to select and evaluate different sources of business finance.
Unit 5 International Business
Students study how UK businesses develop strategies to trade globally. Students will also consider the factors that influence the implementation of these strategies. In this unit, you will explore the benefits and issues associated with international business
activities. You will investigate the economic environment and cultural factors in international markets and the influence they have on how business is conducted. You will also examine the strategic and operational approaches to developing business in an international context. To complete the assessment task within this unit, you will need to draw on your learning from across your programme
Unit 17 Digital Marketing
Learners examine the different aspects of web-based marketing, and the channels that can be used to deliver a successful digital marketing campaign.
Unit 19 Pitching for a new business
Students study the practical skills and acquire the knowledge needed to undertake
the necessary preparation and steps to set up and pitch for funding for a micro
business. This unit will develop the skills needed if you decide to set up your own business.
Unit 27 Work Experience in Business
Students investigate opportunities for work-related learning and engage in work experience in an appropriate and safe manner. Subsequently, they reflect on the work experience undertaken and analyse its influence on their own personal and professional development.
Unit 20 Investigating corporate social responsibility
Students develop an understanding of how businesses adopt policies to respond to societal challenges.

Year 13 Business
In their final year, students primarily tackle key examination synoptic units, these units include;
Unit 6 Principles of Management
Students learn the definitions and functions of management as well as different leadership styles and skills. Students learn about human resources and human resource planning. They learn about the factors influencing management, motivation and performance of the workforce
Unit 7 Business Decision Making
The aim of this unit is to consolidate understanding and skills to enable you to interpret data, and to formulate decisions and solutions to given complex business problems. You will consider business situations/scenarios where you are required to select and use appropriate evidence from several sources to support your arguments.
Unit 8 Recruitment and Selection Process
The aim of this unit is to consolidate understanding and skills to enable you to interpret data, and to formulate decisions and solutions to given complex business problems. You will consider business situations/scenarios where you are required to select and use appropriate evidence from several sources to support your arguments.
Unit 4 Managing an Event
Students will work as part of a small group to plan, coordinate and manage a business or social event and evaluate the skills gained from the experience. They will investigate a number of successful events, both large and small, and use this research to assess the feasibility of events to plan and run yourself. Examples could range from organising meetings, product launches, exhibitions, promotions, charity events, team-building events and staff development, to full-scale conferences.
Unit 22 Market Research
Students examine the different aspects of market research used by businesses. They will undertake a research project, interpret their findings and produce a report. This unit will develop your research skills and your understanding of the role marketing information
plays in identifying and satisfying customers’ needs. In this unit, you will examine the purpose and type of market research undertaken in a business, consider the objectives of the research and the processes followed.
Unit 28 Branding
Students will investigate the role of branding and explore how it is used and will give recommendations for changes to a brand for a selected product.
