January 2023
Hello and Happy 2023!
For the first time in nearly a decade, Westfield residents will go to the polls on Tuesday, April 25 to vote on our school budget. As stated in District Goal #3, we are committed to providing clear, timely, and factual information regarding the 2023-2024 district operating budget to ensure an informed electorate in April.
The most notable and important aspect of the budget vote is that there will be two questions on the ballot, as required by the State. The first question will encompass the base school district budget at a 2% cap, plus any eligible adjustments. The 2nd question will contain any non-mandated costs necessary to maintain existing staff and programs and possible enhancements. The 2023-2024 budget is still under development, with details and language for both ballot questions available in early March.
In the meantime, I encourage you to visit the Budget Vote information portal on the district and school websites to begin educating yourselves on the school budget process and what is at stake in the April vote. We will continue to update the Budget Vote portal as more information becomes available.
Thank you for your continued support,
Dr. González
On January 16, I joined with many members of the Westfield community to march from the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. monument to Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church for the 36th Annual Interfaith Commemorative Service to honor the great civil rights leader. I also enjoyed presenting awards to the many talented elementary and intermediate students whose creative works were selected for recognition in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Westfield's
essay / poetry / art contest.
At the January 17 Board of Education meeting, Dr. González and Business Administrator Patty Ramos presented the first in a series of presentations on the 2023-2024 school budget. They will continue to update the school community at each of the subsequent Board meetings leading up to the election. We encourage you to attend the Board meetings in-person or via Live Stream and to visit the April Budget Vote information portal posted on the district and school websites to stay informed.

In January, a new learning experience was implemented at Edison and Roosevelt Intermediate Schools. Eighth grade students experienced a two week interdisciplinary unit titled The Holocaust: What Hate Can Do. The unit was taught simultaneously in Language Arts and Social Studies classes.
The goal of the interdisciplinary unit was to educate students about the Holocaust, help them understand pre-war Jewish society, how communities have responded to prejudice and discrimination, and consider the responsibilities of citizens to interrupt the escalation of hate and violence. The interdisciplinary unit provides a forum for students to participate in a humanities based approach to learning. Students engaged with topics by reading and discussing survivor testimonies, historic speeches, primary sources, poetry, and art.
The unit will culminate with a schoolwide assembly at both Intermediate Schools during the month of February. Students in grades 6-8 will attend Through the Eyes of a Friend, a nationally acclaimed program that shares the experiences of Anne Frank and young people during the Holocaust. Living Voices is an educational theatre company that combines dynamic performance and archival film to bring life to history. Going forward K-12 Supervisors in ELA and Social Studies will facilitate collaborative meetings with teachers. The focus will be to consider feedback from students and reflect on the unit, with an eye toward refining the lessons and activities for next school year.
The Board of Education held a Regular Public Meeting on January 17, 2023, with Special Meetings held on January 9 & 10. The next regular public meeting of the Board will be on February 7, 2023 in Cafeteria B at Westfield High School.
January is School Board Recognition Month. And, truly, every month should be School Board Recognition Month. The many hours these nine volunteers devote in support of our students and staff goes well beyond these public Board meetings.
There are monthly committee meetings to review district policies, curricula, finances, and other matters as they relate to the district. Board members meet with district administration in private session to discuss confidential matters. They attend training, workshops, and conferences to further educate themselves about their roles as School Board members. They serve as Board liaisons to our PTOs and many of our community partners. All of this while juggling their own career and family commitments. On behalf of the Westfield Public Schools community, we extend our sincere appreciation to the entire Board of Education for their thoughtful and dedicated service.
Petitions are being accepted for candidacy in the April 25, 2023 School Board Election. The deadline to submit to BA/Board Secretary Patricia Ramos is 3 p.m. on Monday, March 6. Petitions/more information are posted under the Board tab on the district website.

Heritage, History, and Religious Observances for February 2023
Schools are closed on February 17 and February 20 for Presidents Day, a federal holiday in recognition of the birthdays of the nation's first president, George Washington and its 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. Many Western Christian denominations will celebrate Ash Wednesday on February 22, a holy day of prayer and fasting that marks the beginning of Lent. According to christianity.com, the ashes placed in the pattern of a cross on a Christian's forehead are often prepared by burning palm branches from the previous Palm Sunday, symbolizing "death and repentance." Lent is always 46 days before Easter Sunday and focuses on "repentance, fasting, reflection, and ultimately celebration."
