October 2021
The Week of "Extra" Respect and School Violence Awareness Week during the month of October allow us to highlight a few of the many ways we prioritize student wellness and the safety and security of our school community. While I have been inspired by the learning taking place in our schools since our return, I also know the transition back to full-time, in-person instruction is not without its challenges. Academic and social-emotional supports are more important than ever. That is why our District Goals focus on ways to provide a safe return to in-person learning, student growth and academic achievement, and a framework to further promote diversity, equity and inclusion in our schools. Our administrators, educators, and support staff are working diligently to meet our students' needs as we continue to reacclimate to the educational environment. Below you'll find additional examples of how we keep health and safety at the forefront of everything we do.
Please stay well!

October 4-8 was the Week of Respect. Please enjoy this 4-minute video to hear how our students and staff define respect.
Election Day is Tuesday, November 2. Three of our schools are designated as polling stations - Edison and Roosevelt Intermediate Schools and Wilson Elementary School. Security is a top priority. Voting will take place in the gymnasiums with a separate entrance for the public and access blocked to other areas of our schools. School Resource Officers will monitor the activity at the intermediate schools; a police officer will be posted at Wilson.
The recent weather events remind us that Mother Nature does not always follow the school calendar. As a reminder, please review our annual inclement weather procedures to familiarize yourself with the types of changes that may occur during an inclement weather event and how decisions are made.
We hope for calm weather and a dry winter ahead (or at least snow on the weekends). In the meantime, stay warm and safe travels.
Our Crisis Communication Plan outlines how the district will respond in an emergency, explains crisis protocols, and provides important tips for families during a school emergency. The plan is posted under "District Information" at www.westfieldnjk12.org.
Annually, the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) requires school districts to provide Boards of Education and the public with updates regarding efforts to keep schools safe and secure for our students. The state-mandated reports reflect the data the school district gathers on an annual basis and reports out to the NJDOE in the areas of violence, vandalism, and harassment, intimidation and bullying. Dr. González presented the reports at the October 19 Board of Education meeting.
The District and Board Goals were Board approved on September 21 and work is already underway to develop plans to guide us this year. Over the course of the year, we look forward to providing updates directly to the community on our progress in each of the areas through school / district communication and public presentations.
