February 2022
Superintendent's Corner
This has been a busy month! We celebrated Black History Month in our classrooms and schools, provided a mid-year review of our District Goals for 2021-2022, shared the results of last fall's Start Strong assessments, and began finalizing the budget for the 2022-2023 school year. Here's a brief summary :
At the February 22 Board of Education meeting, I shared a mid-year review of our district goals. District goals describe areas of specific focus for the school community in a given year based upon a variety of concurrent needs. These annual goals, of course, are not the only areas of focus for the district; however, they signify current year priorities as recommended by the administration and adopted by the Board. I was joined in presenting the mid-year review by Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Programs Dr. Paul Pineiro. If you missed it, I encourage you to take a look at our slide presentation or a video recording of the Board meeting to see the progress we've made so far, along with our next steps.
District Goals #1 and #2 focus on specific areas of student wellness, achievement, and educational continuity. At the February 8 Board meeting, Dr. Pineiro and our content area supervisors provided an overview of the results of Start Strong assessments administered in Fall 2021. Start Strong was designed to help districts identify students who may be in need of academic support interventions. As you will see from Dr. Pineiro's presentation, our district performed well on Start Strong, especially as compared to demographically similar districts and State averages. And long before Start Strong, our administrators and teachers began identifying and working with students whose learning was particularly affected by the pandemic. If you have any questions about your child's progress, as always, reach out to his/her teacher directly.
Over the past few months, Business Administrator Dana Sullivan and I met with school principals and department supervisors to begin the challenging work of establishing a school budget for the coming school year. In particular this year, the increases in expenditures has significantly outpaced the revenues in ways we haven't seen in previous years, undoubtedly impacted by the pandemic. This month and over the next few months leading up to the Board's approval of the final 2022-2023 budget on April 26, we are sharing Budget Previews at each Board of Education meeting to help the school community better understand the history of past budgets and the factors that are considered in developing a budget, while providing a look at the district's projected revenue and expenditures for 2022-2023.
Lastly, whether producing a powerful video series on the Westfield African American History Walking Tour, exploring the many contributions of ancient African societies, or reading and researching non-fiction texts about prominent people and events in African American history, students and educators in the Westfield Public Schools celebrated Black History Month and paid homage to Black Americans throughout history. COVID-19 UPDATE
As I indicated in my February 24 email to the school community, there continues to be positive news on the COVID-19 front. Local and state COVID activity has decreased significantly, with the latest statewide COVID-19 Activity Level Index (CALI) reporting most regions in New Jersey as Moderate (yellow) and a few in the Northeast as Low (green) for the first time since last summer. Therefore, as I stated at the Board of Education meeting on February 22, masks will be optional in most cases in the Westfield Public School District, effective March 7.
As expected, we have received additional guidance from the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH), which I am reviewing with our administrative team and health care professionals to determine the circumstances when masks may be required.
As we prepare for our families and staff to make personal decisions about mask wearing in our schools beginning March 7, it is critical that we all work together to ensure that those personal decisions are respected and supported. I will send another communication this week with an update on our COVID mitigation protocols and procedures as they relate to this important transition.

As part of District Goal #4 to improve communication to the school community, we are working to develop a new website and mobile app to be launched in the summer of 2022.
Let us know how we're doing!
Last month, we distributed our communications survey to families and members of the community, seeking input on ways to improve communication as part of District Goal #4. If you haven't already done so, please take a moment to complete the brief survey to help inform our efforts. The deadline is Friday, March 18. Feedback from our staff and intermediate/high school students will be solicited via an emailed survey. Thank you for your participation.
To advance the common and collective knowledge of issues pertinent to the school community, the District has created an FAQ based on frequent inquiries we receive via email and at public Board meetings.
A synopsis of each Board of Education meeting is emailed to subscribers and posted under the Board tab at www.westfieldnjk12.org, generally no later than the Friday following the Board meeting.
