Look What’s Happening in our Classroom:
We focused on the letter Tt this week. During Heggerty we started to blend the initial consonant with the remainder of the word. For example: /n/ /ap/ we say nap. We have also started segmenting words this way. We say nap the segment into /n/ /ap/. Our rhyme this week was titled Me: On my shoulders, on my face. On my knees and at my side, Then behind me they will hide. February has so many important things to learn about Valentine’s Day, Presidents Day, Groundhog Day, and the 100th day of school! We started our week discussing if the groundhog saw his shadow! We also focused on answering the question: What are some characteristics of roads? This week during math we compared sets by creating a bar graph. We also played the game higher/Lower. You can play this at home with a deck of cards or you can even create number cards. Determine if you will play who has higher or who has lower. Players flip a card and then if you are playing who has higher, the person with the highest number takes all the cards. Comparing, counting, and numeral recognition are all targeted during this game.
Help From Parents
Accepting “no” and “wait” are difficult concepts for young learners. There are many reasons why we have to accept no or wait. Sometimes someone is using the toy or seat we want Other times something can be dangerous. We practiced having one peer ask to play with a toy that another peer was playing with. We all practiced nicely saying “no, you can use it when I am finished.” They also practiced “no, I am still playing.” It is important to practice these skills when we can “act them out.” The children then learn language and how to react. Role playing is important because we can practice a skill when we are not upset or frustrated. Children also learn that “no” is an acceptable word to say if you are using something. Try practicing at home!
