Week 7: October 12th-October 16th
Look What’s Happening in our Classroom:
All About Our Class: This week we discussed how trees look the same and different. We also spent time sorting leaves and describing how they look. We know that trees are different sizes. We learned the words bigger, smaller, wider, skinnier. We created bats to get us ready for Halloween! Some of our class learned the key picture and sound for letter F. We practiced writing on paper, and on a chalkboard. Other friends created letter F with our wooden pieces, and made a dot art picture of letter F. During Heggerty we identified sounds that were the same and different, we practiced rhyming, and our focus sounds for the week were: /p/, /k/, and /d/. The children are doing a nice job clipping sounds and not adding the /u/ sound to the end of sounds. We used acorn and leaf gems to count and create patterns. We also spent time making towers and comparing towers to determine which one had more or fewer cubes. We played Hi/Low with number cards, and used fall counting items, number cards and dominoes to show different ways to make a number! We also visited the Lincoln School Pumpkin Patch this week!

Week 6: October 5th-October 9th
All about our class: This week we have started our Creative Curriculum Unit: Trees. We discussed what we know about trees. We named animals that live in trees, we talked about the parts of a tree, and we also talked about a fruit that grows on a tree. It has a star in the middle to hold the seed. We practiced forming letters and making lines in oats with cinnamon sticks. Writing can be lots of fun! We read We are Going on a Leaf Hunt, Elmer the Elephant, and the Little house that had no windows or doors. We sang Way Up High in the Apple Tree and 5 Little Pumpkins. We practiced taking turns with a friend using various classroom toys. We practiced quiet sitting/waiting and taking turns! We sequenced numerals and dots. Some children also practiced numeral writing 1-5 in order. We all learned about shapes and used shapes to make different pictures. Our highlight was creating “apple pie stew.” We followed a recipe to make a special stew! This week during Fundations we learned about the letter E. We created E with sticks, blocks, magnets, and some of us wrote E using our Fundations lines. We also used sticks to write letters and lines in sand. During our Heggerty lesson we practiced identifying sounds that are the same and different, we practiced rhyming with -en, -ap, nd -ock words, we isolated initial sounds in words, and we practiced blending words together. An example would be book and case form bookcase or play and room make playroom.

Week 5: September 28th-October 2nd
All About our Class: This week we have concluded our All About me unit. We will begin our Trees Unit next week. Throughout the week we attended our Touch a Truck Event. We have also been practicing fire safety in class. At home, you may help by practicing “Stop, Drop, and Roll” if fire is on your clothes. You may also find a meeting place outside your house in case there is a fire and you need to leave your house.
We practiced singing Hickory, Dickory, Dock, Baa Baa Black Sheep, and The Ants go Marching. We read about fire engines and fire safety. We were also introduced to some counting songs such as 5 little pumpkins and Way up high in the apple tree! We practiced making letter D with our Mat Man pieces. Our Fundations group wrote letter D using the sky, plane, and grass lines. Our Heggerty Lessons focused on the focus sounds: f, g, and k. Our rhyme families we practiced were: -ack, -ap, and -et. We blended little word to make big words and we sang the alphabet song. During math, we practiced counting 1-3 in one of our groups. We also practiced numeral recognition for these three numerals.. Our other group used tangrams to create shape pictures. We read our My Big World: Let’s Clap for Sharing! We have reviewed what we have learned in September and discussed some of our favorite classroom activities. Ask your child all about Touch a Truck!

Week 4: September 21st-September 25th
All About Our Week:
This week we focused on rules and choices. We have been introduced to red and green choices. Green choices are choices we want to make such as walking, cleaning up, taking turns, and listening to one another. Red choices are choices that we do not want to make such as breaking crayons, throwing toys, running in the classroom, and yelling. We practiced role playing red and green choices. Our class read The Buddy Bench, and I’ll Wait Mr. Panda. We sang Red Light Green Light, Old Mac Donald, and 1, 2, Buckle my Shoe. Our Fundations Group reviewed key pictures and sounds for letters A-C. We sang the Mat Man song and the students told me how to assemble Mat Man. Some of us practiced matching the letters in our first name, while others ordered letters in their name or practiced writing their name.

Week 3: September 15th-September 19th
We talked about feelings this week. Our feelings are always changing. Talk about when your child has felt happy, excited, scared, or sad. This week some of our students were introduced to Mat Man. Mat Man will help us learn our shapes. He will also help us learn how to form our letters! You will be hearing more about Mat Man in weeks to come! We matched letters, and drew lines on paper. We also practiced learning the song Tap, Tap, Tap with our Mat Man pieces: Tap Big Lines
During Fundations this week Baby Echo(the owl) helped us to learn the key pictures and sounds for the letters Bb, and Cc. Some students practiced forming the letters. We will be using the words sky line, plane line, grass, line and worm line to refer to where we begin each letter. During our Heggerty Lessons we practiced using our ‘ears only” to guess the mystery sound. We listened for rhymes, we identified initial sounds in our names and we recited our ABC’s in order. We played follow the leader to build block towers, drew lines, and continued to practice our classroom rules. During our Discovery center we looked in our “Me bags.” Everyone is doing a GREAT JOB!! Show and Tell began this week. Let me know if you have any questions.The schedule is located on my website. Our Math centers focused on counting on, listening and counting, and number identification. We also identified and graphed our favorite color, flavor of ice cream, and our eye color. We also spent time imitating a pattern with unifix cubes. Some students practiced extending the patterns and creating patterns on their own.

Help From Parents
At home you may try counting. Make counting fun by counting steps to get upstairs, or how many plates are on the table, or how many steps it takes to walk to the car. Counting opportunities are endless! You may also play Guess how many? You may place items on the table or floor and tell your child to hide his/her eyes. WHen they open their eyes, have them touch each object to ensure careful counting. This will assist your child develop 1:1 correspondence. WHen your child is ready, you may tell them a number and have him/her count the number you said. Have fum counting!

Week 2: September 7th-September 11th
This week we began focusing on ourselves. We are learning about our physical features such as our hair, and eye color as well as our favorites such as color, snack, and toy. We are talking about our names and how many letters are in our name. In class some students are beginning to learn how to make vertical lines. These lines will be able to be connected to become letters and numbers. We practiced creating a circle by bending lines. Our students are also learning about the letter Aa. We are learning the key picture and sound as well as how to form the letter. Some of our students spent time creating self portraits. There are also so many “school words.” Some students spent time finding school words in class and writing them. We call this “writing the room.”
We are doing a great job learning our rules: Be kind, walking feet, hands to self, and inside voice. At Lincoln School we are kind, safe, and responsible. We are also learning our hello songs and good-bye song! We practiced taking turns with puzzle pieces, playground equipment, and blocks and cars. We used play doh this week. When you want to loosen the play doh in the jar you can squeeze the jar so it falls out. During math we graphed our favorite colors. We also created crayon patterns and fish patterns. Our class spent time exploring many of our math manipulatives this week. In addition, we also compared and contrasted mirrors and magnifying glasses.

Week One: September 1st-September 4th
Welcome to Pre-K. This week we have been spending time learning about Lincoln School. We have been introduced to daily routines, and practiced cleaning up after we play at a center. We have also learned about different places in the school. In addition, we have learned the names of our new friends! The children did a great job learning how to “check in and check out” of class! Some of the centers we used were the dramatic play center, the building center, the cars center, and the arts and crafts center. This week we learned how to take a tour to preview our centers for the day. Ask your child to show you his/her “tour” hands! We also learned how to use a very important school tool: the glue bottle. We know the use “just a dot, not a lot.” We are going to have a GREAT school year!
Help From Parents: At home you can find out about your child's day by asking specific questions. Try asking questions such as: “What color blocks did you build with, Did you swing on the swings?” You will be able to gain more information rather than asking “What did you do today?” This week I introduced our daily feelings chart. Each day your child will look at different faces and choose how they feel. Practice looking at different faces and talking about how the person feels. You may also try to make different faces to different emotions in a mirror.
