Week 21: January 26th-January 30th
All About Our Class: We focused on letter Ss this week. During Heggwerty we blended and segmented color words and body parts. We continued to identify initial sounds in orders and sing/say our ABCs. This week we have started our Roads Unit. We talked about what we know about roads, looked at maps and road signs, and created a road for our cars. During math we spent time comparing sets. We also played math games that focused on counting sets. During science we learned about snow and snowflakes.
Help From Parents
Sometimes we have to try something that is tricky. It is not easy doing that. We talked about some tricky things like writing letters, learning our address, writing our name, zipping our coat, staying in our bed at night, or waiting in line. When something is tricky we do not need to cry, yell, or scream. We can take a deep breath, ask for help, or keep trying! We learn new things when we keep trying! Try working on one tricky thing at home!

The children are doing a good job understanding a set gets larger when we add 1. During Fundations we focused on the letter Qq. Our Heggerty lesson focussed on determining word pairs that rhyme or do not rhyme. We identified the initial sounds of various words. Our blending and segmenting syllables all contained the ending -ful. During our Language activities we completed fill-ins with words that made sentences sound correct. For example: I can (run, jump, sleep. or I will (eat, play, walk). Try completing fill-ins at home.

We played the skating game to practice turn taking during math. We focused on letter P this week. During Heggerty we identified rhyming pairs, we identified initial sounds in words, and we blended and segmented syllables that contain -ing.
Help From Parents
At home, try practicing playing a game and waiting your turn. Games are a great way to practice counting, winning and losing, and turn taking. In class when someone wins a game we simply say “good game.” In class we have been playing games such as the Shopping Cart Game, Zingo, and Higher/Lower with cards.

Week 14: December 1st-December 5th
This week we started the Creative Curriculum Unit: Buildings/Community helpers. Throughout this unit we will discuss how buildings are made, who helps to build a building, what makes building strong, and tools we use to build buildings. During math we were introduced to a number line. We counted up and back on a floor number line. We also used small number lines to help us create pictures. When the numerals were in order a picture was revealed. In addition we played shape memory and created shape pictures with attribute blocks. This week we learned about the letter M. During Heggerty we learned songs to help us play the game Do they rhyme. “These words are/are not rhyming words, rhyming words, rhyming words, these words are/are not rhyming words so we show thumbs up/ down. It is sung to the tune: Do you know the Muffin Man. Our focus sounds were h, g, and j. For our Language awareness activity we repeated three word sentences and then counted words in the sentences. For example: the teacher says: Can you jump? The students repeat the sentence with the teacher. Then we count words we heard in the sentence.
Help From Parents
At home, try and use materials to build and compare buildings at home. This will assist your learner to use describing words, and his/her imagination. They may also use fine motor skills to cut craft materials to decorate the buildings, glue pieces to a building, or paint or draw on a building in their imagination. **If anyone would like to share a craft/story/snack that teaches about your family’s holiday traditions, please contact me!! We would love for you to visit!

All About Our Class: Our class focused on the words: thankful and appreciation this week. We listened to songs and stories that helped to define these words. We also discussed things and people we are thankful for. We practiced letter L and used our wooden pieces to make this letter. During Heggerty we learned how to use our “chopping hands” to blend and segment multi syllable word: sunny, bunny, ready, funny. During Math, we locate positions on a number line. We played math games that allowed us time to practice using a number line to count up and back. Our read a louds were all about Thanksgiving this week!
Help From Parents
At home, try and create a number line. You may draw it outside with chalk or use paper and crayons. Have your child practice jumping up and back on the number line while saying each numeral. You may also have you child find the “secret number.” Give him/her clues such as: find the number that is after 7 and put a car on it. Or, find the number that is before 3 and put a stuffed animal on it. Have fun playing the number line game!

Week 12: November 17th-November 21st
Look What’s Happening in our Classroom:
This week we have concluded our Tree Unit. Our next Creative Curriculum Unit that will begin after the Thanksgiving break is titled: Buildings and Community Helpers. This week we spent time focusing on thankfulness and family. We spent time counting syllables and rhyming, blending, segmenting, and reviewing our ABCs. We also learned the nursery rhyme: Hey Diddle, Diddle. . In addition we also spent time learning about the letter K. During math we spent time matching numerals while playing a version of concentration. We also extended patterns that we started for us.
Help From Parents
At home, try practicing taking turns talking about an object. Have your child choose a toy or object in your home. Decide who will talk about the item first. While the person is speaking, the other person must sit with a quiet mouth and body for up to 1 minute. You may want to set a timer. When the timer sounds, the other person has the turn to talk about the object. If your child has mastered this skill, you may include questions. Choose an object to talk about and place it in the middle of a table. The first person asks a question to their speaking partner. For example, what color is the truck? The other person answers and then asks a question of his/ her own to their speaking partner. For example, Is the truck big or little? See how many times your child can go back and forth asking and answering questions about the object while staying on topic.

Look What’s Happening in our Classroom:
All About Our Class: This week we continued talking about what happens to the trees and how they change. We also talked about how we can use different parts of a tree. We created some Thanksgiving crafts. We made letter J with our wooden pieces, made a dot art picture of the letter J and focused on writing letter J. We reviewed the key picture/sound for letters we have learned. We continue to rhyme, blend, and segment words, and say our ABCs. This week during Heggerty our focus sounds were: t, g, and m. Our Nursery rhyme was Star Light Star Bright. We played a dog and bone game to help us match sets that are the same. We read about trees in different seasons.
Help From Parents
Try playing games like Go Fish and Old Maid with your child. Go Fish and Old Maid will help you to practice finding pictures that are the same. Same and different is an important concept in Pre K. These games will also help teach your child turn taking. When playing a game make sure you take time for your child to “explore” the game and pieces before you begin playing. Talk about the pictures, and give the language such as “do you have a…” The more you review what to expect during game play and practice steps, the easier it will be when you actually play the game.

In addition our focus sounds were n, b, and f. During Fundations we focused on learning the key picture and sound for the letter G. We also practiced making letter G with our wooden pieces, and made a dot art picture of letter G.. This week we read the stories: Room on a Broom, and Good Night Owl. We talked about numbers that are higher or lower. Some of our groups created collections to represent different numbers. We also practiced counting on and back from a stopped position. Ask your child about our Halloween party!
Help From Parents
At home try practicing looking for words when you are out walking or driving. Children learn how to read environmental print such as Burger King, Target, Stop, and Dairy Queen quickly! We are exposed to environmental print all the time. Once you ask them what word they “read,” talk about the first letter or sound of the word. Have fun!

We created candy corn to get us ready for Halloween! Some of our class learned the key picture and sound for letter F. We practiced writing on paper, and on a chalkboard. Other friends created letter F with our wooden pieces, and made a dot art picture of letter F. During Heggerty we identified sounds that were the same and different, we practiced rhyming, and our focus sounds for the week were: /p/, /k/, and /d/. The children are doing a nice job clipping sounds and not adding the /u/ sound to the end of sounds. We used acorn and leaf gems to count and create patterns. We also spent time making towers and comparing towers to determine which one had more or fewer cubes. We played Hi/Low with number cards, and used fall counting items, number cards and dominoes to show different ways to make a number! We also visited the Lincoln School Pumpkin Patch this week!

Help From Parents
When you are reading before bedtime, try asking your child to tell the story with his/her own words. If your child is ready you may have him/her point to a specific letter or word on the page. It is also fun to try and create a different ending to different stories. Have fun reading!

September 22nd-September 26th
This week we focused on rules and choices. We have been introduced to red and green choices. Green choices are choices we want to make such as walking, cleaning up, taking turns, and listening to one another. Red choices are choices that we do not want to make such as breaking crayons, throwing toys, running, and yelling. We practiced role playing red and green choices.
All About Our Week: Our class read The Buddy Bench, Fill a Bucket, and I’ll Wait Mr. Panda. We sang the Green Choices Song, Old Mac Donald, and 1, 2, Buckle my Shoe. Our Fundations Group reviewed key pictures and sounds for letters A-C. Some of us practiced matching the letters in our first name, while others ordered letters in their name or practiced writing their name. The children had time to try and “guess what is in the bag.” We practiced labeling the items in the bag. During Heggerty we practiced rhyming, blending two small words to make a big word, and identifying initial sounds.

We talked about feelings this week. Our feelings are always changing. Talk about when your child has felt happy, excited, scared, or sad. This week We also practiced learning the song Tap Big Lines with our rhythm sticks, Tap Big Lines. During Fundations this week Baby Echo(the owl) helped us to learn the key pictures and sounds for the letters Bb, and Cc. Some students practiced forming the letters. We will be using the words sky line, plane line, grass, line and worm line to refer to where we begin each letter. During our Heggerty Lessons we practiced using our ‘ears only” to guess the mystery sound. We listened for rhymes, we identified initial sounds in our names and we recited our ABC’s in order. We played follow the leader to build block towers, drew lines, and continued to practice our classroom rules. During our Discovery center we looked in our “Me bags.” Show and Tell began this week. Let me know if you have any questions. Our Math centers focused on counting on, listening and counting, and number identification. We also identified and graphed our favorite color and our favorite flavor of ice cream. We spent time imitating a pattern with unifix cubes. Some students practiced extending the patterns and creating patterns on their own. During Science, we participated in the egg challenge. We tried to balance our eggs on a spoon. Our mission was not to crack our egg. We learned that an egg can not be put together once it cracks.

This week we began focusing on ourselves. We are learning about our physical features such as our hair, and eye color as well as our favorites such as color, snack, and toy. We are talking about our names and how many letters are in our name. In class some students are beginning to learn how to make vertical lines. These lines will be able to be connected to become letters and numbers. We practiced creating a circle by bending lines. Our students are learning about the letter Aa. We are learning the key picture and sound as well as how to form the letter. We sang the song Where do we start our letters:Where Do You Start Your Letters? Some of our students spent time creating self portraits. There are also so many “school words.” Some students spent time finding school words in class. As the year progresses, some friends will write down wrods they see. We call this “writing the room.”
At the end of each center we also listened to the clean up timer song.

Week 1: September 4th & 5th
Welcome to Pre-K. The past two days we have been spending time learning about Lincoln School. We have been introduced to daily routines, and practiced cleaning up after we play at a center. We have also learned about different places in the school. In addition, we have learned the names of our new friends! The children did a great job learning how to “check in and check out” of class! Some of the centers we used were the dramatic play center, the building center and the arts and crafts center. This week we learned how to take a tour to preview our centers for the day. Ask your child to show you his/her “tour” hands! We are going to have a GREAT school year!
Help From Parents: At home you can find out about your child's day by asking specific questions. Try asking questions such as: “What color blocks did you build with, Did you swing on the swings?” You will be able to gain more information rather than asking “What did you do today?” This week I introduced our daily feelings chart. Each day your child will look at different faces and choose how they feel. Practice looking at different faces and talking about how the person feels. You may also try to make different faces to different emotions in a mirror.

Llama Llama Time To Share Read Aloud

Dear Parents,
I want to welcome you to Pre-K. My name is Kim Conklin, and I will be your child’s teacher this year! I have been teaching in Westfield for the past 28 years. I have taught Kindergarten and First Grade. I have also taught the First through Third Grade Language and Learning Disabilities class located at McKinley School for eight years. For the past eleven years, I have been here at Lincoln School teaching Full Day Kindergarten and Integrated Pre-K.
I am so excited to meet all of you! This year we are going to learn and have so much fun! Get ready for a GREAT year! We will be having a Meet and Greet at Lincoln School on:
Wednesday, September 3rd
AM class: 12:45PM-1:15: Meet on the Front Lawn
PM class: 1:20PM-1:50PM Meet at Non playground door
Parents are invited to accompany students to their Pre-K classrooms during the Meet and Greet
If you need to contact me prior to September, please feel free to email me at KConklin@westfieldnjk12.org. I look forward to working with you. Get ready for a Great year!
I am including a supply list. I am also including a getting to know your child handout. If you have a chance, please fill it out and send it to school with your child or take a picture of it and email it to me. It would also be very helpful to know at least 4 favorite snacks and 4 favorite toys that your child has. I would also request that you send in or email me a wallet size photo of your child so that we can place it in the cubby where your child will hang his/her backpack. Thanks in advance. Enjoy the last week of summer! See you all on Thursday, September 4th.
Sincerely,
Kim Conklin
