Last year, there was a chance for me to participate in the quiz competition held by The Peaceful Unification Advisory Council (PUAC) on inter-Korean relations. Through the preparations for that quiz, learning and memorizing hundreds of questions and information, I could win 2nd place. Winning the competition led to another opportunity to join the PUAC as a junior member. Since then, I could observe and learn about the relationship between South and North Korea in many aspects by experiencing a lot of activities. My participation in this debate about Korean unification was also one of the significant activities that allowed me to feel and think in different ways about history as well as the current situation of North and South Korea.
Thinking and sharing each other’s thoughts about various events that I had not usually thought about before was definitely a grateful experience. “Why is unification necessary? Why does it have to be now? What is the most feasible way to achieve peaceful unification of the Korean Peninsula?” Numerous questions, including those above, were able to be answered from different points of view and this process of getting a step closer to the council’s goal of peaceful unification was very interesting.
This is me stating the reason why the official declaration of the end of the Korean War is essential. I made my point by comparing it to volcanoes. The presence of active volcanoes that are likely to erupt again can cause anxiety among people. On the other hand, the extinct volcanoes that are not expected to erupt in the future don’t lead to any concern. Therefore, it has the same idea as the declaration of the end of the war, which can allow the people and society to be relieved. After I finished my words, I could hear the clapping and this was the point where my mind calmed down and got less nervous about being on the stage. It was a great experience that I could develop different debating skills and techniques such as the way to prepare for it, speaking clearly with confidence as well as how to say to and convince the audience.
