Our ASL Club embarked on a meaningful excursion to two significant destinations in Bangkok, holding immense importance for the deaf community. Our first destination was the Setsatian School for the Deaf, followed by a visit to the YimSoo Cafe, a remarkable establishment that prioritizes sign language as a means of communication, supporting its hearing-impaired staff.
The responsibility of contacting the school fell on me, as I am a club member fluent in Thai. After several weeks of exchanging emails and messages, we successfully confirmed the trip. Next, we had to plan the activities we would engage in with the students at Setsatian. As it was our first time interacting with them, we took the time to discuss and review the experiences of past ASL trips organized by graduated students. Once we decided on the activities, we prepared the necessary materials and expanded our knowledge of TSL vocabulary to facilitate effective communication.
Originally, we were filled with a sense of apprehension regarding the reception we would receive and the smooth execution of our plan. However, as we introduced ourselves and delved into the activities, including crafting origami cranes and hearts, engaging in Sign Language matching games, and playing Uno, we witnessed a gradual dissipation of our nervousness. In an instant, we formed close bonds and developed friendships with the Setsatian students. We even exchanged Instagram accounts and maintained contact after the visit. Through video calls, they continued to teach me numerous TSL words, deepening our connection.
Before returning to Wells, we visited YimSoo Cafe. Here, we had the opportunity to learn basic sign language phrases for ordering food and beverages and try the cafe's delightful offerings.
This trip proved to be an invaluable experience for the members of our ASL Club as it provided us with a remarkable opportunity to apply our knowledge of sign language in real-world settings. Additionally, we had the privilege of learning the fundamentals of Thai Sign Language (TSL) from enthusiastic experts, including the students and teachers at Setsatian School, who warmly welcomed us with open arms.
