Encourage your child to get involved! There are MANY extracurricular activities that your student can get involved with at WHS. There are sports, clubs, and groups that meet a wide range of interests and passions. Getting involved with something (or many things) at school allows your child to make new friendships, expand their knowledge and experience new things. Studies show that students who are involved in High School have a more enjoyable experience and are more well rounded.
Encourage good study habits at home. While it may be time to allow your student the freedom to be responsible for their own school work and studying, you can still encourage them and come alongside them through the process. Help them come up with a study schedule. Encourage them to put their devices down when it is time for homework and studying to help them focus. You may not be able to answer questions or explain concepts from their homework anymore, so advocate for them and encourage them to ask their teachers for help when they need it.
Encourage your child to be their own advocate. Now that they are in High School, this is a great time for them to start taking responsibility for aspects of their education that you may have helped them with before now. Encourage them to reach out to their teachers if they have questions or concerns before you do. Encourage them to stand up for themselves. Encourage them to ask questions and engage with the staff and administration at WHS.
Get to know your child's teachers: The teachers at WHS are wonderful and dedicated professionals that truly want what is best for your student. Take some time to get to know them so that you will feel comfortable reaching out to them during the school year if needed.
Be in the know! Keep yourself and your student up to date with information on the school website, such as the daily announcements or calendar. Utilize Teacher Ease to keep up to speed with your child's grades and assignment completion. Check your email regularly for correspondence from teachers, staff, or administration regarding your student or school-wide information.
