School counselors provide direct and indirect services within the school to serve students, their families, and the school. Direct services are interactions between the students and the counselor including instruction, appraisal, counseling, and advisement (ASCA, 2019). Indirect services involve interactions with others through consultation, collaboration, and referrals to help students be successful and have their needs met (ASCA, 2019).
School counselors should spend %80 percent of their time devoted to direct and indirect services in their school counseling program, per ASCA's recommendation (ASCA, 2019).
School Counseling services will include:
Teaching curriculum lessons on academic, college and career, and social/emotional development.
Facilitating small groups for students with attendance, behavior, and achievement needs.
Providing short-term individual counseling (2-6 sessions) and crisis counseling as needed. If a student needs more than six (6) counseling sessions for their mental health, a meeting with parents will be mandatory.
Supporting parents through the referral process to identify community resources based on students' needs.
Collaborating with stakeholders for the success of your child.
