Message from your 7-9th Grade School Counselors:
Choosing your courses and planning a schedule in middle school is so exciting. You are presented with opportunities to explore something new or delve deeper into subjects that interest you. Also, for the first time you can make personal decisions, based on your own needs, about how full your schedule should be. No one wants an academic load that is either too easy or too hard. Take time to reflect on how full your life is with extra-curricular activities, how much academic support you need during the school day and whether or not you are ready for the added academic challenge of learning a new language. As you make these decisions, work with your family and your current teachers. They can help guide your choices. The grades 7-9 counselors are available to assist you with any questions, concerns or goal planning as you journey into this next phase of your education.
Beginning in the spring semester, middle school counselors visit 6th grade classes from each sending school. Students are given an overview of the middle school schedule, required courses and how to choose electives. A hard copy course guide will be sent home with each student to look over course descriptions.
Required classes will automatically be entered into schedules so course selection is for electives only. The required "core classes" are Humanities, Math, Life Science, and Wellness (1/2 Health, 1/2 PE), and Geometry (1/4).
Students and parents are encouraged to consult with current 6th grade teachers for advice on how many electives to choose, and whether or not to take a foreign language in middle school.
After the classroom visits, a course request form will be emailed to both students and parents. Fill it out together and submit the form by the stated due date
Completed schedules will be sent out over the summer.
Counselors are available the week before the first day of school to make any necessary schedule changes and adjustments.
