Module 4

Insecticides: Costs vs. Benefits

In Module 4, students will consider the impact of human/environmental interaction as they read the novel Frightful's Mountain. They will also read several complex scientific articles about the benefits and consequences of DDT. Students will focus on developing an academic argument based on research that is for or against the ue of the chemical . Students will then apply their research to write a position paper and finally hold a mock trial to decide whether or not to continue or ban DDT. Students will answer the guiding questions: Do the benefits of DDT outweigh its harmful consequences? How do human actions affect the natural world? How do different authors approach providing information and making an argument? How does reading for research help me to form an opinion and make an argument?
