Module 2
Voices of Adversity
In Module 2, students will look at adversities of people across time and place through multiple modes of writing. Students will begin this module with a research-based unit on the Middle Ages (which covers learning standards from our Social Studies curriculum). Students then move on to read Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! Voices from a Medieval Village by Laura Amy Schlitz, which includes monologues written in verse and prose. To compare and contrast the Middle Ages to the modern day, we read concrete poetry books Blue Lipstick and Technically, It's Not My Fault. We will answer the guiding questions: How do authors use language to convey theme and meaning in a literary text? What adversities do children of the Middle Ages face? Do we struggle with the same adversities in the modern day?
Unit 1: Adversity in Medieval Times
Unit 2: Monologues, Language, and Literary Argument: Voices of Medieval Village
