Thank you for visiting our 7th Grade School Safety Lessons website. Here, you will learn information about all of the district required trainings to help our students recognize safety concerns and how to advocate for the safety of themselves and others. There are three trainings required by the district for 7th grade students. For more information and available resources, Please click on the links below to learn more about each training:
Developmentally, all middle school students are kids with growing need for independence. However, there are many opportunities for potential dangers, especially as our students navigate new environments, peers, and even social media. North Carolina law mandates that all students in grades 7-9 receive instruction concerning trafficking prevention and awareness. These lessons will occur with the school counselor through your student's Health class. In class, the student will participate in a brief survey to help staff in identifying high-risk pupils and referring them to assistance resources.
Students will receive lessons through their Health class with their School Counselor and another Student Services professional available for support. There are always two adults in the classroom during the lesson, a district approved HT lesson plan is followed, and a training video is shown. Parents will receive a copy of these letters in email, from students, and through Talking Points. *Parents may call, email, or write Talking Points to opt out of this presentation.*
The adolescent years are marked by a roller-coaster ride of emotions. To proactively address these issues, Wakefield Middle School is offering the district required offering depression awareness and suicide prevention training as part of the SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program. The program has proven to be successful at increasing help seeking by students concerned about themselves or a friend. Please read the letter (in English and Spanish) linked below for more information.
In WCPSS, the district requires students at grades 7, 9, and 12th grade to learn about Signs of Suicide (SOS). The SOS (Signs of Suicide) is a research evidence based suicide prevention program geared for middle and high school students. The main message of the program in 7th and 9th grade is to ACT: Acknowledge, Care and Tell.
