Establishing a Respectful Environment for Diverse Students

Teachers work collaboratively with the families and significant adults in the lives of their students. • Improve communication and collaboration between the school and the home and community; • Promote trust and understanding and build partnerships with school community; and • Seek solutions to overcome obstacles that prevent family and community involvement.

Although WCPSS approved TalkingPoints as the main parent communication platform in order to promote diversity and equitable family communication, I as an ESL teacher, have used TalkingPoints for several years now to communicate with our dual-language families. This year I am excited to be a participant on the TalkingPoints Teacher Advisory Panel. In order to help improve WCPSS's chosen platform for family outreach, I have participated in the TAP Facebook Group and various PLC meets, pilot tests, funder-reach interviews, and other outreach activities. Because of our teacher input, TalkingPoints has made various improvements to the platform, such as: the ability to video record messages, improvements to polling, teacher data points, and other communication enhancements. TalkingPoints continues to improve the functionality and benefits to teachers working to increase family outreach and engagement based upon feedback like mine. This has lead to increased parent engagement and - in turn - improved student outcomes.
