Salem Elementary School's Wake Forward focus areas and goals
A strong school library program connects students to the world around them through research and inquiry, and by supporting a climate and culture of literacy. These connections are made through collaborative lessons and programming that integrate information and technology skills with classroom curriculum, through the curation of relevant and reliable print and digital resources, and by empowering students in the 4C’s.
Curriculum & Instruction Goals - Focus Area #1
Over the course of the 18/19 academic year, the media and technology teachers will meet with grade level teams on a monthly basis in order to collaborate and align classroom content with resources and lessons available through the library and technology programs. The focus will be on integration of grade level standards with ITES Standards in creating lesson plans and the resulting student products should reflect learning through classroom instruction, technology instruction and research and information literacy instruction.
A strong school library program develops partnerships with the community (families, caregivers, businesses, non-profit organizations, local government, experts in fields related to curriculum topics, etc.). These partnerships exist to support student learning, mentorship, community engagement, and library advocacy.
Family & Community Partnerships - Focus Area #2
Over the course of the 18/19 academic year, the school media program will seek to increase family and community engagement in order to enhance the student instructional experience. This will be accomplished by integrating strategies learned by the school library media coordinator and technology teacher attending professional development sessions through Wake County Public Schools and a school wide book study on Powerful Partnerships: A Teacher's Guide to Engaging Families for Student Success by Karen Mapp.
The school library program will initiate or participate in several events during the 18/19 school year including hosting an Hour of Code night, and showcasing the school library program during the school wide STEAM night and Raleigh family night.
