We understand that every school is different and may provide quarter or semester cycles. If the applicant only has access to first quarters grades then that is acceptable as well.
The three essay responses are reviewed carefully by our team and we recommend that the applicant pay close attention to using correct grammar and punctuation as they prepare their responses, underline or highlight the most important words in the question to help them stay focused on answering the questions, providing a relevant answer while also displaying their knowledge.
Reviewers look for a GPA of 3.0 or higher however we have a holistic process where we do not look at GPA only, but the scholar's leadership, extra-curricular activities, and community involvement).
LEAD and the GSLI host institutions take the health and safety of our scholars very seriously. We must go along with the expectations and requirements that each institution has in place. All institutions require that the scholars are vaccinated to participate on-campus and we request that the applicant submit a copy of their vaccinations cards on the application. At this time we understand that there may be changes with regulations put into place by different states that may affect the on-campus portion of our program and we are prepared in case those changes transpire.
The SAT/ACT test scores are used as an extra assessment for evaluation. If students have not taken the college admission tests yet, we require that they send the scores once they are available to info@leadprogram.org, addressed to the LEAD Application Review Team.
The deadline to complete the LEAD application is March 1, 2022, at 11:59 pm. We encourage applicants to apply early to be considered for early acceptance.

Note About the Reach Out Initiative: The Design Lab for K-12 Education's Reach Out initiative aims to expand the influence of design to build a more diverse student body at the College of Design, and to encourage design as a future sustainable career path. Today, more than ever, the influence of design matters. It impacts the world we live in and everyday we are exposed to the importance of design. The influence and inclusion of diversity in design is critical, as diversity provides broader ideas, understanding, and, ultimately, results in better decisions. The Reach Out initiative consists of educational design programming for public school teachers and students from underserved and/or underrepresented communities in North Carolina, and is meant to expose students and teachers to the benefits of design thinking and design career paths.

American Association of University Women
Join the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the Arconic Foundation to ignite a promising future for girls! Ensuring that girls are exposed to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) is fundamental to AAUW’s mission of advancing gender equity. As soon as girls start school, they encounter subtle (and sometimes blatant) messages that discourage them from pursuing their curiosity about science. Students of color and those from low-income families face additional barriers and biases.
This summer, they are offering a free STEMEd for Girls program for girls in grades 9-12, which includes six 1½- to 2-hour virtual sessions.
Access Registration Information for Free AAUW STEMEd Program
The program is designed to attract teen girls to STEM and help parents and guardians to nurture their girls’ potential at college and beyond. Participants will also get advice and inspiration from STEM ambassadors/mentors.
STEMEd for Girls virtual camps will be held from July through August 2021. This program will help students gain confidence, have fun, get inspired—and join a national community of girls and women. If you have any questions about this exciting opportunity, please contact stem@aauw.org.
