Ms. Ziller, Ms. Richardson, and Ms. Harnden presented Family History Research for students to PHMS faculty at the March professional learning day.
In addition to regularly-scheduled circulation class visits every week, Ms. Ziller collaborated with teachers and PLTs to create the following learning experiences for students:
8th Grade Family History Project with Ms. Richardson & Ms. Harnden
Ancient Civilizations Project and Library Map Project with Ms. Speaks
Year-Long Country Project with Ms. Kirby, Ms. Harnden, Ms. Sykes, and Ms. Sayah
Historical Book Project with Mr. Collins
Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky by Kwame Mbalia was our Community Reads title for the 2019-2020 school year. The PTSA generously purchased 45 library copies and over 200 students checked them out during the school year. Lunch & Learn activity sessions were held throughout the school year, an after-school book discussion event provided an opportunity for students and parents to come together and discuss the book. During the COVID19 schooling-at-home time, Mr. Mbalia graciously visited the PHMS Virtual Book Club and shared about his writing process, read an excerpt from his book, and answered student questions.
Ms. Ziller and Mr. Hutchinson were thrilled to present at the WCPSS Winter Convergence where they shared the PHMS Community Reads program with WCPSS teachers, library media specialists, and technology staff.
Fantasy author, Shannon Messenger, visited PHMS in November 2019. All 6th grade students attended in the auditorium. There was much excitement over her visit and books in her popular series, Keeper of the Lost Cities, were consistently on the library hold list for the remainder of the school year.
Based on survey feedback from students, the PHMS Library Fiction Collection started it's transformation to a genre organization system. This will replace the current ABC order by the author's last name. Many outside volunteers and student helpers have helped with identifying genre, adding genre-specific stickers to book spines, and adding the genre classification into the Destiny library catalog. This project will continue into the 2020-2021 school year.
Ms. Ziller created a virtual library space for students and teachers to access library materials, activities, and resources. Ms. Ziller also created Digital Collections in Destiny Discover to support students and teachers during schooling-at-home. She was also available for 'virtual office hours' to assist students and teachers.
Ms. Ziller consistently met virtually with PLTs through the remainder of 2019-2020 to share professional resources and resources available for students.
Library Announcements were shared via a Slides document that teams shared with students each week. Information about the library was updated frequently, including new digital titles added to the collection and library activities and contests.
Interested students met each Friday during schooling-at-home time to talk about books they were reading, sharing reading-related news, and found a safe space to meet with other PHMS students.
Ms. Ziller curated the Destiny Library Catalog by emphasizing ebooks and audiobooks. Collections on curricular topics were created and Topics buttons were added to make searching for books easier.
Ms. Ziller read and recorded a science poem each week to align with the 7th grade human body unit.
