Students participated in a PHMS Reading Challenge through library circulation visits. Students set reading goals, were challenged to read outside of their usual leanings, set New Years reading goals, and explore Community Reads titles.
A PHMS Reading Challenge logo contest allowed artistic students to create a reading-themed drawing to be included on library bookmarks.

Students continued to recommend books for purchase via the recommendation box in the library & through the link on library website.
Ms. Ziller focused on ordering books from publishers who focus on diversity and 'own voice' experiences.
Two reading-related clubs were offered on Club Days - the DEAR Club and Battle of the Books.
The PHMS Book Madness Tournament took place in March and April and gained much excitement for 32 of the top title check-outs this school year.
Ms. Ziller shared curriculum-specific titles to circulation classes and read aloud from picture books during circulation time.
A culture of reading was cultivated among PHMS staff book through book sharing at monthly staff meetings.
Community Reads
Community Reads
- Ms. Ziller and Mr. Hutchinson collaborated on a community-wide Community Reads program this school year. Refugee by Alan Gratz, Ghost by Jason Reynolds, and a 'your choice' dystopian selection were the featured Reads. We invited a local refugee speaker to our first culminating event, and lunch and after-school discussion sessions for all three book choices.
6th Grade Writing Workshop
6th Grade Writing Workshop
- Local author, John Claude Bemis, hosted a writing workshop for all sixth graders. Sponsored by the PTSA, students engaged in brainstorming activities to spark their own creative writing journey and learned about the writing process and life as an author from Mr. Bemus.

- Library Ambassadors were an integral part of library programming and displays. Students organized a book swap event, advertised and organized books for the Wake Up and Read book drive (636 books were collected), Created book displays throughout the library, and helped plan Teen Read Week and National Library Week.

Ms. Ziller worked with many teachers on collaborative projects in 2018-2019. Here are the highlights:

- Ms. George and Ms. Harnden (natural resources)
- Ms. Harnden and Ms. Elliot (Ancestry Immigration project)
- Ms. Speaks (ancient civilizations)
- Ms. Stevenson (FAS ~ decades of fashion)
- Ms. Lauer and Ms. Speares (food deserts)
In addition, multiple classroom library bookcarts were sent to classrooms throughout the year for teachers and students to use as supplemental materials.

Digital Collection launch
- Starting this school year, students and staff have access to an extensive ebook and audiobook collection via Destiny Discover and MackinVIA. Patrons who enjoy reading their books on their device or who prefer listening to their books now have those options available.
