The students researched different Parliamentary acts that led to the American Revolution. They presented what they learned on Friday. Today we'll be reading a play about the Boston Massacre, and then we'll focus on a few major battles of the war. I'm hoping to wrap this unit up this week and begin our Science unit on Human Body Systems next week!

This week we will focus on the events leading up to the American Revolution and the students will jigsaw the different Acts such as the Stamp Act and Townshend Acts. Ask your fifth grader about last week's "No Taxation without Representation" activity with the smarties!

Last week students created paper slideshow videos to teach others what they learned about early life in the colonies. This week we'll review those videos and begin to explore causes of the Revolutionary War (cue: smarties as taxes).

This week we'll be learning about the Colonization of early America. Students will work with partners to learn about either the New England colonies, Middle colonies, or the Southern colonies, and will present their findings to others by the end of the week. More specifically, they'll read to learn more about the individual colonies included, who they were founded by, the economy, and prevailing religions.

The kids did amazing on their first two "states" quizzes! I am so impressed by their study skills, determination, and passion for learning. A few students even chose to challenge themselves by also learning the state capitals!

This week students will study the rest of the states. On Friday they'll be quizzed on the Midwest, Southwest, and West Regions of the US. We'll also be learning more about world geography and map skills. (continents, oceans, longitude, latitude, equator, prime meridian, etc)

We've been talking about the relative locations of the different 50 United States. On Tuesday, students took a quiz to see how many Southeast/Northeast states they can locate on a map. I'll be giving them class time each day to study/practice. We talked about using a growth mindset while learning these states. Regardless of how many they get right, they'll hopefully know the location of more states than they did yesterday!
