Classroom News & Updates

The week of 4/1...

  • Today I'm sending home a math assessment from last quarter. It was on multiplying and dividing decimals. This proved to be pretty challenging for lots of kids, but I believe they were mostly challenged by the reading (of the word problems) rather than the actually math. Knowing how to multiply/divide decimals is one thing, but understanding when to do these things within the context of a word problem is tough! We'll do lots of work with word problems this quarter.

The week of 3/1...

  • We made it to the final week of the quarter! Your kiddos really have had an amazing quarter of learning. I am so proud of them and can't wait for them to share all the great things they've learned at our Student-Led Conferences on Thursday. Click here to see sign up times.
  • We are looking forward to finishing Wonder and watching the movie on Friday! I'll provide popcorn, but if you could make sure your fifth grader has plenty of water and they're welcome to bring their own movie candy.
  • Chaperones, we will have a meeting on March 9th at 5:30. Please let me know if you can't attend, and I'll get the information to you.
  • Spring is right around the corner, and so is our Annual Human Growth and Development Parent Information Session! On March 9th at 6pm, we'll outline what we'll be covering in this unit (and what we WON'T be covering).

  • On Thursday night you're invited to view science fair projects, shop at the book fair, and visit classrooms to receive make & take literacy/science activities for your children! The fun starts at 5:30.
  • Last Friday's field trip to Harris Teeter was huge success! This was a first for fifth grade, and we'll definitely do it again. With the help of our awesome parent volunteers, students maneuvered around the grocery store and solved three real-world math challenges. Harris Teeter was kind enough to donate pizzas that fed our class and Mrs. Baker's class!
  • Last week we finished reading Wonder. Someone once said "Finishing a good book is like leaving a good friend..." So true! We'll culminate and celebrate this shared experience by watching the movie on our Track Out Day. Stay tuned for more details... Next we're reading a mystery that takes place in a fictional NC town, Three Times Lucky.

  • We're looking forward to our Math Challenge/Grocery Store visit on Friday. We'll be at the Harris Teeter (at the corner of Ten-Ten and Kildaire) from about 9:30-11:00. Thanks to those parents that volunteered to chaperone!
  • We will exchange class valentines on Friday, February 14th. If students choose to participate, they should have a valentine for everyone. A class list can be found below. If students like, they can bring a bag/box (on 2/14) to collect their valentines.
  • Thanks to Ella's mom for organizing our Wallypalooza basket. It's going to be a good one! If you haven't already checked out the sign up genius, check here to donate.
  • Yearbook dedications are due on Thursday, 2/20.

The week of 2/3...

  • Today we watched another video by Colby Sharpe that highlighted the books his fifth graders were reading in January. So many of our kiddos are loving reading right now! We have to try to keep books that they'll love in their hands.
  • We have our math field trip to the grocery store on Friday, February 14th and are in need of chaperones! Our excursion will last from 9:30-11:00ish, and each chaperone will be in charge of a group of 4-5 students. You'll need to help them solve their math challenges. If you would be willing to chaperone (and have volunteer clearance), please email me! I'll then be in touch with more specific details. Thank you, in advance, for your help!
  • Please ensure your fifth grader has functional earbuds at school. These were on our supply list at the beginning of the year. We're currently watching videos/listening to podcasts during our ELA lessons.

  • Please remember the deadline for yearbook ads is February 20th.
  • We will exchange class valentines on February 14th. If students choose to participate, they should have a valentine for everyone. A class list can be found below. If students like, they can bring a bag/box (on 2/14) to collect their valentines.

  • Last week's Science Fun field trip was so cool! The kids got to hold, observe, and sort real animal organs into different body systems. Be sure ask your child about this experience!
  • I'm finding that some students are really sleepy in class. Please make every effort to see that they're in bed (without a screen) at a decent time!
  • Thank you for all of the support that you give me (and consequently, your fifth grader). This is the time of year that students really begin to struggle with finding that balance between being social (and doing what gets attention from their peers) and doing what's right. I believe that's perfectly typical. With your help, though, I think we can help them to begin to find that balance (before middle school :).
  • Be sure to check out my Positivity Project, ELA, Math, and Social Studies pages to see what we'll be learning about this week.
  • We will exchange class valentines on February 14th. If students choose to participate, they should have a valentine for everyone. A class list can be found below. If students like, they can bring a bag/box (on 2/14) to collect their valentines.

  • Today a Scholastic Book order is coming home. If interested, please place your order online by 1/20. LOTS of great titles!

The week of 1/6...

  • Welcome back to our first full week of school in 2020! It was so great to see the kids last week and hear about their vacations and holidays.
  • Last week we kicked off our time back by creating 2020 Vision Boards, in which they added words, colors, quotes and images that they want to see more of in their lives. These turned out great!
  • Report cards are coming home today. Please let me know if you have any questions.
  • Students will be taking Case 21 assessments this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. While this assessment is not a grade, it is a way for us to see which objectives we need to continue to focus on. The students will take one assessment for reading, math and science. These assessments are long, but they will help prepare and build stamina for the end-of-grade tests in May. A good night's sleep and breakfast will help them along!
  • The WLE Science Fair is coming! It will be held in the gym on Thursday, February 20, 2020, with projects due for judging on Wednesday, February 19, 2010. Guidelines, FAQs, and registration can be found here.

Throughout this ELA unit, students have been working to write, revise, and publish two first person narratives that build out an event in The Most Beautiful Roof in the World. • Congratulations to Naylor, our class Spelling Bee winner! Naylor will represent our class at the school spelling bee in January. I'm so proud of all the students that chose to participate!

The week of 11/18...

  • We still need a parent to coordinate our Wallypalooza Basket. Please let me know if you'd be able and willing!
  • Recently, we’ve seen more misbehavior from some of our fifth graders during lunch, specials, and recess. We’ve discussed these and the potential consequences with our students. Although we’re not seeing many of these choices within our classrooms, you can understand how they can affect the learning within our classrooms, as well as inhibiting the personal and social growth we’d like to see from our students. We’ll, of course, communicate any misbehavior/consequences to you. We thank you, in advance, for your support!
  • We'll have our class spelling bee today! (A handout regarding this came home a few weeks ago.) Participation is optional and the class winner will proceed to the schoolwide Spelling Bee.
  • As we were talking about and practice reading fluency last week, it dawned on me that fifth graders rarely read aloud anymore. This makes it difficult to improve reading fluency! So...we're going to start doing Reading Buddies with Mrs. Long and Mrs. Nicholl's kindergarten classes. This will provide opportunities for so many good things, on so many levels! We're hoping to meet our buddies a few times before track out.
  • In today's blue folders, you'll receive information about the following:
    • Our latest Scholastic Book order. (These make great Christmas gifts!)
    • Square 1 Art order.
    • A handout regarding our Winter Mug Exchange (see below).

The week of 11/12...

  • Thank you to everyone for making the first deposit for our VA field trip! The next deposit will be due after Christmas.

  • This Saturday is a make-up day.
    • The instructional day will be from 7:40-11:10
    • No breakfast or lunch will be served.

The week of 11/4...

  • Our first deposit of $125 for our VA trip is due this Friday!
  • This week during Positivity Project, we're continuing to talk about Bravery. I'm using this time to help students understand why we're honoring veterans on Veteran's Day. Check out these videos to see what I'll share with them...

JJ Watt-Thank you, veterans

Thank you for your service. What the phrase means to local vets.

We'll also be writing letters to veterans and/or active military to thank them for their service!

  • So still no nightly assigned homework, but some parents have asked how they can support their fifth grader's learning at home...Great question!
    • Your fifth grader should be reading at least 30 minutes per night! I'm beginning to track what/how much they're reading at school (and encouraging many to try more grade-level appropriate texts). Students are more than welcome to bring these books home, as long as they return with them the following day. If you're interested in your child doing this and feel as though he may need a gentle reminder to do this, just let me know!
    • Dreambox is an an adaptive, online math program designed to complement classroom instruction. Students have started using this a few times each week. Lessons should take about 8-12 minutes. They're welcome to try this out at home, though they should work without paper/pencil, calculator, and help from others.
    • Science Vocabulary-Any time students can give to studying their science vocabulary, would be a huge help! Students can access Quizlet via the WLE site. If your fifth grader needs a new copy of our list of words/definitions, let me know.
