Last week students learned about the skeletal, muscular, digestive, and respiratory systems. This week they'll learn about the circulatory and the nervous system. We'll take an assessment by the end of the week!

February 24, 2020

This week we will begin our exploration of the different body systems and how they work together and function.

February 18, 2020

This week we'll start learning about six of the major body systems. Students will take notes as we focus primarily on each system's major function/parts and how different systems work together.

Last week we were focusing on traits.

  • Traits are observable characteristics we inherit from our parents or are shaped by our environment.
  • Some traits are more common in a population while others are not.
  • Every person has a different overall combination of traits that makes them unique.
  • An individual will have many traits they share in common with many others.

Ask your fifth grader what traits make him unique!

This week we'll learn how traits are passed through generations, and we'll determine how DNA influences a dog's physical traits.

February 3, 2020

This week we'll begin our study of Living Organisms and the Human Body.

December 2, 2019

Last week students took the end of unit test for Ecosystems. Overall, they did well! Scores were based on the grading scale used in middle school (10 point scale). This week we'll finish their Ecosystem probes and do some Force & Motion/Ecosystem Review.

November 18, 2019

Students will choose one biome to learn more about. We'll share their findings later this week.

November 12, 2019

Students will be bringing home last week's quiz on food chains.

This week we'll be learning more about different biomes around the globe. The five major types of biomes are: aquatic, desert, forest, grassland, and tundra. Students will learn locations and characteristics of each.

Today students received their Ecosystem Probe Assignment. This will be due December 6th. Many students did not complete last quarter's science probe. Please touch base with your fifth grader regarding this. They're more than welcome to work on this at home, if need be!

November 4, 2019

This week we're learning more about food chains and food webs. Ask your fifth grader to share what's he's learned!

October 28, 2019

Today we're starting this quarter's Science unit on Ecosystems! This week we'll be talking about biotic/abiotic factors, examples of producers/consumers, and we'll begin to build an understanding of interdependence within an ecosystem.

The kids took their final unit test on Force and Motion last week. This was a really tough test, just as the Science EOG will be. It required careful reading and test-taking strategies. I scored these based on the grading scale that students will be graded on in middle school...60% and above is considered passing. Please be sure to review the incorrect answers with your fifth graders. Some mistakes literally came down to overlooking one word!

August 26, 2019

The kids really enjoyed building vehicles with K'Nex last week! This week we'll experiment with the effect of force and adding weight to these. We'll wrap up this unit with an assessment by Friday!

The kids were also assigned a Probe last week. It included concepts taught throughout the unit. We're using about ten minutes of each class to work on this, and it'll be due 9/3.

August 19, 2019

Last week students worked on interpreting distance/time graphs. This was challenging, but the kids persevered and really caught on to this!

This week we'll be experimenting with Technological Design and Development as students plan, build, and experiment with K'Nex cars.

August 12, 2019

The kids did great with Newton's Laws of Motion last week! If you haven't already seen their artifacts in Seesaw, check it out! On Monday we'll begin working on interpreting graphs that show distance/time.

August 5, 2019

We're continuing to learn about various principles of Force & Motion. The kids did really great on our first science quiz. That's coming home today.

July 29, 2019

We're beginning our first Science Unit on Force & Motion! Today students are learning about the differences between balanced and unbalanced forces. Ask your fifth grader for examples of each...
