COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

DANCE I | Beginning Dance

Dance I is a beginning-level course that introduces students to the foundations of dance. Students will learn movement skills, develop their dance technique, and begin to build a strong dance vocabulary. We will dive into different styles of dance and spend time focusing on their origins. Students will also learn basic choreographic principles and apply them through various independent and collaborative dance studies. Throughout the course of the semester, we spend time preparing for a dance performance at the end of the semester!

MS. POTTER

Welcome to Apex Friendship High School Dance!

My name is Sydney Potter, and I am the Dance Director at AFHS. This is my first year at AFHS, and I could not be more excited!

I have trained and competed in various forms of dance but have a special love for modern, tap, and contemporary fusion forms. After high school, I received my B.A. in Dance Education with a K-12 Teaching Licensure from Meredith College.

I am very passionate about both Dance and Education.

Throughout my years at Meredith, I have received recognition in both performance and choreography. While at Meredith I was a full company member of Meredith Dance Theater and the Meredith Tap and Jazz Company.

I love dance (obviously), baking, hanging out with my cat, and trying new places to eat!

My Philosophy

I am a firm believer in the value and relevance of the student experience. Every student is unique, with their own ideas and strengths. I encourage curiosity, movement exploration, and risk-taking without fear of judgment or failure. My goal as an educator is to cultivate a supportive, nurturing environment while also maintaining high expectations. As a dance educator, and a dancer myself, I understand the power that this art form can have on one’s perception of self and the world around them. Keeping this art form alive in the school system is critical to empowering students to find growth, self-love, respect for the world around them, and artistic expression on their academic journey.
