This is my 6th year as a CDC, 4years at AFHS and AFMS. The survey results from students speak for themselves and can be found on this page: https://bit.ly/ArtifactsTanyaGuinnCDC2021 The important thing is that students are learning more about themselves, taking personality and learning styles assessments and exploring careers that match. They begin to see the big picture of their life, and when they have career goals in place, they naturally want to do even better in school. Many have taken advantage of being more well rounded by doing community service, volunteer work, getting part time work in their area of career interest and joining clubs that enhance their skills in that area as well. (Medical careers: HOSA, Business: DECA, Technology: TSA, Law: Speech & Debate, Real Estate/Interior & Fashion Design: FCCLA, Performing Arts: Theater/Visual Arts/Chorus, and this is just a few, we have hundreds! I love doing one one one career counseling sessions with students, they sign up after career lessons and follow up with them to meet during lunch or after school. We dig deeper into career information, specific for them.

I attend monthly PLT's (Professional Learning Teams) with all High School & Middle School CDC's in the county. 2020-21 was the year I began presenting at state conferences, virtually, representing our school system Wake County Public Schools. I presented a break out session at a state conference as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor last year. This year, I co-presented for our DPI Collaboration Stations with another Career Development Coordinator and shared about how we worked together with teams of CDCs from high schools across Wake County to create our virtual College Fair and virtual Career Fairs. The audience was other CDCs around the state of NC and share this so they could use a copy at their schools as well, this was on 9/30 and 10/7. I also presented at our NC ACTE Fall virtual Conference on 10/26 about our virtual College & Career Fairs (also for CDCs/SPCs statewide, and at the NCCDA Annual Conference on 11/19 presented at a break out session on our virtual College & Career Fairs, the audience were CDCs, Admin & Teachers from pubic, private k-12 schools statewide, as colleges/universities. It was a rewarding experience and I am grateful to have these opportunities to share what we are doing as teams of CDCs across our county. More recently, I facilitated a break out session on how to write professional Thank You notes for students at our Career Connections 2021 virtual Career Fair and part two I facilitated the Industry Fair and had Jason Buch from Insomniac Games present about his career as a professional Illustrator/Graphic Artist. In Spring 2021 I facilitated a session with a guest speaker from Advanced Manufacturing at our North Central region Conference.

As I reflect on my professional development, as a CDC... I realized that the CTE Conferences are not like the School Counselor Conferences I was used to; however, School Counselor Conferences need more Career training, and how to implement a Mentoring program in schools, and I do believe that ALL schools need Mentoring programs!

I did present to my CDC PLT about what I learned at the fall Conference in Boone. My favorite break out session was Everfi since it was a free program that teaches students, online, one on one about many different subjects, and it is free! The facilitator from Everfi sent us a box full of headphones for my elective as well, enough that I could share quite a few with April our testing coordinator. As I presented at my CDC PLT for all CDC's in Wake Co, middle school level.

As well as other trainings I have attended to further my expertise as a Counselor, Career Development Coordinator/Career Counselor, Teacher and as an LPC, licensed as a Therapist and now Distance Therapist to provide therapy from my home office. I have an office in Apex, where I provide mental health/family therapy on weekends.

So almost two years ago I added CDC and last summer studied and took the exam to add FACS, so that I could try teaching this year.
This was the 120 hours of training I attended both in person and online to become licensed as a CDC.
This is my license as an LPC, I left the school system after 7 years as a School Counselor in 2004. I earned my LPC and returned to WCPSS six years later in 2010. Still have a small private practice in Apex, where I share an office with another Therapist.
As a Licensed Therapist, I went to a training last summer and became a Distance Credentialed Counselor, DCC! This means I can do therapy with clients online, through a HIPPA compliant portal, and can see clients from all over NC.
