Canadian Identity

Our design -

For our design we chose to do a Canadian flag in the background and added the Olympic rings and two crossed two hockey sticks. Last but not least we put some national sports we are known for within the Olympic rings .

Why did we do it? -

We chose this because we think that sports are very important to Canada. We are very competitive in many sports including Olympic sports. We decided to do the Canadian flag at the base of our 3D creation because we did not just want to represent sports we wanted to represent our country . What better way to represent our country than our national flag? We chose to do the Olympic rings because we compete in the Olympics every time. This represents us very well because in a lot of the Olympic sports, we do well and many Canadian athletes participate and train really hard. We also did hockey sticks crossing through the Olympic rings. Hockey is one of the sports Canada is known for the most. We choose to represent hockey, basketball, and lacrosse in the rings. We did a basketball because believe it or not Canada created the sport basketball. This sport has been around for 119 years! That's 79.33% of how long Canada has been around! But this sport was not an Olympic sport until 1936. This sport was created by a man named James Naismith who was working at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891. The original baskets were peach baskets with wire backboards. They played wit a soccer ball and they had to throw it into the baskets. The Referees were tired of having to keep climbing the ladder and so James Naismith had an idea to cut out the bottom of the peach baskets. We did a soccer ball because soccer is one of the sports that we did not create but we play often. We chose to put a hockey puck in one of the Olympic rings following the theme of hockey being our national sport. We also did a shoe to represent Terry Fox and how he ran across Canada for people with cancer. We put lacrosse sticks in another ring because like said before, we created lacrosse.

Where and What? -

We chose to put it in front of the parliament building in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Our group decided to make our monument out of Metal Alloy so that it is sturdy and strong. We chose to put our monument in Ottawa Ontario, Canada because the parliament building is a very important place that represents us as a country. We wanted our monument to be somewhere that stands out.

For our design 1cm in the drawing equals 0.5m in real life. Since our model is 120mm long for the print, it will be 6 meters in reality.

The process -

1. Get a rectangle and and make it flat (70mm by 50mm)
2. Then get two other small rectangles and put them on the side of the large rectangle to make the sides of the flag (25mm by 50mm)
3. For the stem of the maple leaf on the Canadian flag (2 mm by 23mm)
4. The take two triangles and put them angled slightly down ( 26.66mm by 18.05mm )
5. Then take a rectangle and attached it to the right side of the half maple leaf (18.52mm by 17.15 mm)
6. Then get two triangles and turn them into holes and attached them to the rectangle on the right side of the maple leaf (10.34mm by 19.99mm)
7. Then add a rectangle to the very top (13mm by 26mm)
8. After, we made two of the same triangles with the same measurement of before and made them holes and attached it to the top of the rectangle.
9. Then we copied the rectangle and triangles from the right side and put it on the left.
10. After, we made the Olympic rings by just taking rings, coloring them to the proper colors and connecting them together.
11. Then we made the sports symbols (Basketball, Soccer, Running, Hockey, Lacrosse) and put them in the rings they belong in.
12. Finally, We made two hockey sticks and crossed them behind the sports and rings, and grouped everything together.

During our project we had fails with the printing part so we went back into tinker cad and made changes with the thickness direction of hockey sticks and minor details to make the print smoother.
