Peace and Freedom Monument

Our Monument

For our monument we wanted to have very important people in Canadian history standing and holding a big shield. Sitting on that shield would be a dove, representing peace. Shown on the shield is the peace symbol itself with a maple leaf in the background. Although there were a lot of people, we wished to place on the monument in our initial design, this was not possible due to lack of space. The people on the actual monument are John A MacDonald and Sir Wilfrid Laurier.

Why we designed this

We decided to design this monument because we feel that peace is a huge part of our nation. Canada is known globally for our peacekeeping and freedom. The peace symbol represents peace, and the dove freedom. In 2015 we had nearly 25000 Syrian refugees come to Canada when the U.S was restricting them. Since we feel Canada’s commitment to peace and freedom is so important to our nation we decided to design a monument for it.

Rationale for original concept

Important People

For our monument we wanted to have very important people in Canada's history those who are responsible for our peaceful and free country surrounding the shield. We decided to do some research, one person who should definitely be holding the shield is Fredrick Carter, He was one of the people who created the Canadian Confederation. Another person who should be on our monument is John McRae. We felt that he should be sitting on the steps of the monument and leaning on the shield writing a poem. Also John A Macdonald, he was the first Prime Minister of Canada if anyone should be on that platform holding the shield it should be him. In 1534 Jacques Cartier discovered Canada so he should definitely be holding the shield.

Dove and Eagle

On this monument is a dove and eagle.The dove is sitting on the left side of the shield and the eagle the right. The dove represents peace and the eagle freedom as they always have and always will.

Shield

The shield is in the center of the monument. It represents protection and honour. It represents protection because a long time ago knights defended the weak and the main symbol of a knight was his shield. The shield represents honour because most knights lived by a code of honour and they would promise to uphold it at about the same time as when they received their shield.

People shaking hands

The people shaking hands represent peace, agreement and respect. They are in the foreground of the shield. The people represent peace because they are not fighting or arguing, they are agreeing and when people shake hands they usually respect each other.

Maple Leaf

The maple leaf is in the background of the shield. It represents Canada as it is on the Canadian flag.

Location

We decided to place our monument in Shelbourne, Nova Scotia. This is because our topic is peace and freedom and one of the things we are learning about in class is what happened to the Black Loyalists after the American Revolution. If you do not know what the black loyalists were, they were slaves who were loyal to Britain during the American Revolution. So in honour of them we decided to place our monument where the Black Loyalists went after the American Revolution which is Shelbourne Nova Scotia.

Material

We decided that the monument would be made out of iron. The iron would be galvanized using the zinc hot dip method so it wouldn’t rust. Iron symbolizes protection, physical power and growth so we thought that it would be perfect to symbolize our monument.

Designing it on tinkercad

1. We started by creating a square making it very large and flattening it.
2. Next we made a second square that was not as large as the first and flattening it to the same length as the first square.
3. After that we tried to import an image. We thought that if we imported an image and placed it on tinkercad it would become 3D. Unfortunately we were wrong.
4. We managed to figure out how to do it eventually though. We found a shield online that somebody else built and rebuilt the platform underneath it. To get the shield in 3d we had to download it as an STL file
5. Then we resized the shield in order to allow the eagle and dove to sit on it.
6. Once we did that we realized that the eagle was too american and decided to only have the dove on the shield. We placed the dove on the center of the top of the shield using clipboard. But we didn't know how to get to our clip port so we did the same thing with the dove, we downloaded an stl file.
