Ronald Reagan was the 40th president of the United States. He served as president from 1981-1989.
Ronald Reagan is most well known for his economic plan known as "Reaganomics" which involved high interest rates and a 25% tax cut. This resulted in the biggest economic expansion to that point in history. By 1988 unemployment had fallen to 5.5% which was the lowest in 14 years. For context the unemployment rate as of March 2024 is 3.8%. Critics of "Reaganomics" referred to this strategy as "trickle down economics". It was nicknamed this because many people felt that this strategy had a food chain effect. Meaning the wealthy (top of the food chain) benefited the most. From there the benefits trickled down so by the time you reached the bottom of the food chain people were only slightly being benefited.
On March 30th, 1981, there was an assassination attempt on president Ronald Reagan as he was leaving the Hilton Hotel in Washington D.C. John Hinkley Jr. fired his .22 caliber revolver at the president and his security team. Reagan was hit with a ricochet off of the limousine. He was then taken to the George Washington University Hospital. He stayed in the hospital for 13 days and then returned to the White House. John Hinkley Jr. was found not guilty by reason of mental insanity. Hinkley was fully released on June 15, 2022.
