In January 2026, New Jersey signed into law a K-12 "Bell-to-bell" ban on cell phones and all internet enabled devices (P.L.2025, c.195). Below are important key points to note about the law.
The Bell-to-Bell refers to the first bell of the day to the dismissal bell.
Cell phones, smartwatches, smartglasses (example: Meta Glasses), bluetooth headphones, and any other technology that connects via wifi to phones and/or the internet are covered under this law and not permitted to be used during the school day.
If a student chooses to bring a device described above, the student must lock it in their assigned locker and not use it until the dismissal bell rings.
Students caught with cell phones and/or smart devices will have their devices confiscated as well as parent notification of each offense.
Students with cell phones on and out will receive progressive discipline dependent upon the use of the cell phone. See the Discipline Chart for more details.
Exemptions for students who require use of a device for specific, documented educational or personal health needs may be considered. Families must contact the main office, 504 coordinator or the child study team to discuss eligibility of an exemption.
