Academic Integrity is a commitment to honestly represent student performance in the classroom and on assignments. Using someone else's work and presenting it as your own, providing false information about your work and cheating of any kind is not tolerated. More details can be found in board policy 5701
Plagiarism is defined as using someone else's work and using it as if it is your own original work without giving credit to the source.
Artificial intelligence is a rapidly evolving field of technology. The goal of our artificial intelligence acceptable use guidelines is to help teachers, students and families understand the expectations for general acceptable use on assignments for MacKinnon Middle school. Teachers may have more specific and/or more stringent guidelines for particular assignments and assessments and will provide those guidelines when giving assignments that do not follow the guidelines below.
Learning experiences and assignments at MacKinnon Middle School are designed for students to have the opportunity to develop new skills and ways of thinking, learn new material, and apply that knowledge to assignments, projects and other assessments of learning.
Generative artificial intelligence use and other artificial intelligence assistance for research, development writing and/or other applications should only be used when expressly authorized by the classroom teacher. Its permissible use should not be assumed.
In the event a student is suspected of using A.I. in a way that violates Board of Education policy 2365 - “ACCEPTABLE USE OF GENERATIVE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)”, the teachers and administrators will intervene in the following ways:
Conference with the student about suspected AI unacceptable use/misuse.
Present any evidence to support suspected use (AI detector software, GoGuardian screenshots, GoGuardian website visitation logs, etc.)
Warning + Conference between student and teacher providing an opportunity to complete the assignment again for credit without the use of AI and under conditions set by teacher(s) and administration.
Possible loss of credit for the assignment, earning a zero (0) if determined to be intentional academic dishonesty.
These incidents may result in disciplinary action consistent with the Student Code of Conduct, Acceptable Use Policy, and district AI procedures after appropriate investigation.
Before using AI, ask yourself:
✅ Did my teacher allow AI for this assignment?
✅ Am I doing the thinking and learning?
✅ Can I explain this work on my own?
✅ Have I cited AI if my teacher required it?
If the answer to any of these questions is no, stop and ask your teacher before continuing.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be a valuable learning tool when used appropriately. At our school, AI should support your learning—not replace your thinking.
Always follow your teacher's directions for each assignment. If you are unsure whether AI is allowed, ask before using it.
🔴 Red Light: Stop. AI is not permitted for this assignment or is being used dishonestly.
🟡 Yellow Light: Use caution. AI may only be used for specific parts of the assignment or only after completing your own work first.
🟢 Green Light: AI is allowed. Your teacher has clearly stated AI may be used and explained how.
